A jury in Providence County Superior Court has found 51-year-old Javier Camacho Garcia guilty of sexually assaulting a woman he had previously dated, with the attacks stretching across several months in 2023 in Central Falls. Jurors convicted him on one count each of domestic first-degree sexual assault, domestic simple assault and domestic disorderly conduct.
According to the Valley Breeze, the state presented evidence that Garcia assaulted the victim multiple times between February and May 2023 after the two had previously been in a relationship. The Rhode Island Attorney General's Office has said Garcia threatened the victim over text message, and that he asked her to come to his house in February 2023, where he then sexually assaulted her, as WPRI reported.
A Pattern of Abuse Over Several Months
The attorney general's office has said Garcia assaulted the victim again in May 2023, months after the initial incident at his house. It was only after that second assault that the victim reported what had happened to the Central Falls Police Department, according to the same account from the Valley Breeze.
The case moved through the courts over more than two years. A Providence County Grand Jury had returned an indictment against Garcia on February 8, 2024, charging him with two counts of first-degree domestic sexual assault along with one count each of domestic simple assault and domestic disorderly conduct, according to the Rhode Island Attorney General's Office.
Officials React to the Verdict
Attorney General Peter F. Neronha addressed the broader toll of cases like this one, saying, “Sexual assault causes lasting physical and emotional trauma,” and encouraging victims to come forward, per the Valley Breeze's report.
Central Falls Police Chief Anthony J. Roberson praised the woman at the center of the case for coming forward and seeing the process through. “I commend her bravery throughout this process,” Roberson said, according to the same report, adding that justice had been served.
Garcia Awaits Sentencing in January
Garcia is currently being held without bail at the Adult Correctional Institutions in Cranston while he awaits a sentencing hearing scheduled for January 15, 2027. The outcome of that hearing, including any sentence the court may impose, has not yet been determined.
