Centre College has received a $225 million gift from an anonymous donor, anchoring the public launch of a $450 million fundraising campaign the small Danville, Kentucky liberal arts school is calling Pillars of Excellence. The gift will create an endowed fund aimed squarely at keeping tuition manageable for students at the 1,400-student campus.
Money Goes Into a New Centre Forever Fund
The $225 million contribution will create the Centre Forever Fund, an endowed fund designated to provide merit- and need-based scholarships and support academic programs at the college, according to The Lane Report. As reported by Louisville Business First, the gift anchors the campaign's public rollout, which Centre College is positioning as a transformational moment for the school's finances.
The broader Pillars of Excellence campaign is targeting $450 million overall, and college leaders say the goal is to double Centre's endowment from roughly $450 million to about $900 million, according to Forbes. The campaign is organized around six priority areas, a structure inspired by the six columns of Old Centre, the campus's original 1820 building, the same report notes.
A Campus Landmark Shapes the Campaign's Framework
Old Centre was completed in 1820 for $8,000, according to the college's own account of its history. The building's six columns inspired the campaign's framework, while the money itself is meant to address a distinctly modern problem: the rising cost of attending a small private college.
For the 2025–2026 academic year, Centre's comprehensive fee was $70,340, per reporting from the student newspaper, The Cento. The figure provides context for the gift's planned support for scholarships and academic programs.
Echoes of a Pledge That Collapsed in 2013
Centre College has been here before, at least in headline form. In July 2013, the college announced a $250 million pledge from the A. Eugene Brockman Charitable Trust, as reported by The NonProfit Times, but the gift was withdrawn a few weeks later following a significant capital-market event involving a failed recapitalization and refinancing loan for Reynolds & Reynolds, as Forbes reported. That collapse hung over the school for years, making this week's confirmed $225 million gift a notable moment of validation for an institution that once saw a similar sum slip away.
Centre has had more recent success with large scholarship commitments. In September 2022, the college established a $50 million scholarship initiative backed by a $20 million anonymous gift paired with a $20 million matching grant from the Schuler Education Foundation, Forbes reported at the time. That track record of attracting major matching gifts helps frame why donors and administrators alike saw this year's nine-figure pledge as plausible rather than another false start.
The Gift's Scale
The $225 million gift is a major philanthropic commitment to Centre College, a 1,400-student college in Danville.
Centre maintains a 10:1 student-to-faculty ratio across its campus, according to Colleges That Change Lives, and college leaders point to outcomes as part of their pitch to donors and prospective students. Ninety-eight percent of Centre College graduates are employed or enrolled in graduate school within one year of completion, according to the Lane Report.
