Opened in 1988, the 17-story property at 2151 Avenue of the Stars has operated under the J.W. Marriott and Park Hyatt names and closed during the pandemic. Urbanize LA reported plans for a nearly $98 million renovation and identifies the former hotel as having 375 rooms: Urbanize LA’s report.
Century City’s planning framework
A Los Angeles City Planning environmental review says the Century City North Specific Plan controls development in its area through parcel trip allocations and prohibits development that exceeds the total allocations. This provides broader land-use context for the hotel project, but does not establish a trip allocation for this specific property, according to Los Angeles City Planning.
Permit work covers guest and public areas
The permit scope reported by Urbanize LA includes upgrades to guestrooms, public spaces and back-of-house areas, as well as changes to the restaurant areas, lobby, bar, reception, meeting rooms and offices. Plans also include a second-floor pool bar and boardroom. The report names Gensler as the renovation designer and Pankow Builders as contractor.
The announced hotel plan
La Fontaine’s announcement describes a 362-room property, including 150 suites, operated by Davidson Hospitality Group, with Gensler serving as architect and interior designer. Its announcement gives an early 2027 opening target, while the hotel website lists spring 2027. The two public schedules differ, and neither source explains the discrepancy.
Space for meetings and events
According to La Fontaine’s announcement on PRWeb, the hotel plans more than 16,000 square feet of indoor meeting and event space and more than 13,000 square feet outdoors. The announced venues include a 4,159-square-foot ballroom that can be divided into three salons, a Wedding Garden and an approximately 7,100-square-foot Event Deck.
