A Harris County Sheriff's Office deputy was shot overnight in Channelview, and the suspect responsible fled the scene driving off in the deputy's own marked patrol car, according to Sheriff Ed Gonzalez. The shooting happened in the 1100 block of Bayou Drive near the East Freeway, a stretch of East Harris County that sits just off Interstate 10.
Gonzalez posted preliminary details about the shooting and the suspect's escape in a patrol vehicle on X on Wednesday, as reported by Click2Houston. The sheriff said the deputy sustained a gunshot wound, though the deputy's condition was not immediately known at the time of the post. FOX 26 Houston also reported that the shooting happened near I-10.
The Harris County Sheriff's Office asked anyone with information about the suspect or the missing patrol car to call dispatch at 713-221-6000. The station noted that reporters plan to update the story as new information becomes available, and as of this writing, no arrest has been announced.
A Community That Relies Entirely on County Deputies
Channelview is an unincorporated census-designated place in eastern Harris County with an estimated 2024 population of 43,605, situated along the Houston Ship Channel near I-10, per the U.S. Census Bureau and Data USA. Because the community has no municipal police department of its own, residents depend directly on sheriff's deputies for patrol coverage, a detail that underscores why the loss of a marked patrol car is more than a logistical headache for investigators.
The Harris County Sheriff's Office is the largest sheriff's department in Texas and the third-largest in the country, with more than 5,000 personnel covering over 4 million residents across 1,700 square miles, the agency says on its website. That scale means a single incident in Channelview draws on the same countywide response network tasked with patrolling some of the region's most far-flung unincorporated areas.
What the Suspect Could Face
Fleeing in a law enforcement vehicle without permission falls under Texas Penal Code § 31.07, classified as Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle — a state jail felony punishable by 180 days to two years in state jail and fines up to $10,000, according to legal analysis published by Saputo Toufexis. Unlike theft charges, prosecutors in these cases only need to show the vehicle was operated without the owner's effective consent, not that the suspect intended to keep it permanently.
Separately, under Texas Penal Code § 22.02, aggravated assault requires serious bodily injury or use or exhibition of a deadly weapon, and the first-degree felony enhancement applies when the peace officer is lawfully discharging an official duty, per Brian Foley Law.
Blue Alert Criteria and a Pattern of Danger
A Blue Alert had been issued for Chase Layne Patin in connection with the Channelview shooting.
A video showed events leading to deputies shooting and killing a man who posed as a police officer, according to KHOU.
Nationally, the danger facing officers has been trending upward. FBI Law Enforcement Officers Killed and Assaulted statistics released in May showed U.S. agencies reported 90,178 officer assaults in 2025, a 10-year-high rate of 13.8 assaults per 100 officers, even as firearm-related injuries to officers dipped slightly compared with 2023.
No details on the suspect's identity or a vehicle description had been released as of this writing. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Harris County Sheriff's Office dispatch line.
