A Charlotte firefighter who caught a woman falling from a third-floor apartment breezeway back in March just got a sweet surprise: a full year of free coffee. Dunkin’ Donuts showed up Thursday to present firefighter Jerome Taylor with the gift, honoring the kind of split-second heroics that don’t usually come with a reward beyond a pat on the back.
According to WCCB Charlotte, Dunkin’ surprised Taylor with a year’s supply of free coffee on Thursday, months after his March rescue made headlines. Taylor caught the woman as she fell from the breezeway, an act of quick reflexes and instinct that put him in the right place at exactly the right moment.
A Bravery Award Followed the Rescue
Charlotte Fire recognized Taylor’s actions with its Award for Bravery, the station reports. It’s the kind of formal recognition reserved for first responders whose work goes well beyond a routine shift, and it set the stage for this week’s coffee surprise, even though the exact timing between the March rescue and the award itself wasn’t detailed.
The gesture comes amid a broader wave of first-responder appreciation from Dunkin’ locations elsewhere in the region. On October 28, a Metro Atlanta Dunkin’ franchise network called IDH Alliance invited first responders to participating locations for a free medium beverage of their choice, as reported by Atlanta Daily World. First responders simply needed to show an official badge at checkout to redeem the offer, which was limited to one medium drink per person, excluded Cold Brew, and applied only on that single day.
Similar Offers Popped Up Statewide
Stephen Attard, operating partner of IDH Alliance, said the free-coffee gesture was meant as a thank-you to the people who show up when things go wrong. “Their courage and commitment deserve recognition,” Attard said, per the same Atlanta Daily World report.
Participating Dunkin’ shops in Forsyth County ran a similar promotion that same day, tied to National First Responders Day, according to the Forsyth County News, which reported that badge-holders could enjoy a free drink at those locations. Taylor’s prize stands apart from those one-day deals, since his reward spans a full year rather than a single visit.
What’s clear is that a Charlotte firefighter who didn’t hesitate when someone needed catching is now getting his morning cup covered, one small thank-you for a split-second decision that mattered.
