The Cherokee Indian Police Department is mourning the loss of one of its own after announcing that Detective Jeff Smith died in the line of duty on Friday. The department said Smith passed away while performing his duties and serving his community, though it has not elaborated on the circumstances surrounding his death.
According to WYFF4, the department confirmed Smith “passed away this afternoon while performing his duties.” The agency also asked for patience and space as Smith's loved ones process the loss, saying, “Please give his family some privacy and time to grieve. Service announcements will be announced later.” As of Friday, no further details about Smith's death had been released.
Police Chief Confirms Line-of-Duty Death
Cherokee Indian Police Chief Carla Neadeau confirmed that Smith died while performing his duties, as reported by Fox Carolina. The station also reported that other agencies across western North Carolina have shared statements mourning Smith's death, though the specific departments involved were not identified in that reporting.
Separately, officials noted that U.S. 19 was closed to drivers for several hours Friday afternoon because of a police investigation. The same report from WYFF4, originally detailed by WLOS, made clear that officials have not confirmed whether the highway closure and Smith's death are connected.
Community Awaits Service Details
For now, the Cherokee Indian Police Department has said only that service announcements for Detective Smith will come at a later date. The agency's request for privacy underscores how fresh and painful the loss remains for the department and the broader law enforcement community in the region.
The Officer Down Memorial Page, which tracks tribal police line-of-duty deaths nationally, lists past losses within the department, including Patrol Officer Anthony E. Lossiah of the Cherokee Indian Police Department, underscoring that Smith's death adds to a somber history the agency has faced before.
