Chick's Deli, the Cherry Hill sandwich shop that's been slinging cheesesteaks since 1957, is finally leaving the nest. The South Jersey institution has signed on for a second location at Priscilla Town Center on the Black Horse Pike in Turnersville, bringing its hoagies and cheesesteaks into Washington Township for the first time in nearly seven decades.
The new shop will occupy the signature end unit in a newer extension of the shopping center, according to 42 Freeway, which reports the vacant space comes with its own entry foyer. The South Jersey Food Scene newsletter pins the address as Priscilla Towne Center, 5151 Route 42, placing the future sandwich counter alongside a nail salon that previously moved into the same newer stretch of the plaza.
Spring 2027 Is the Goal, But Nothing's Set in Stone
Chick's Deli is targeting a spring opening, with March 2027 being the month the team would love to have everything ready, per the same 42 Freeway report. The outlet notes that interior buildout had not started as of publication, and no firm opening date has been announced, leaving the exact timeline still up in the air.
That hasn't dampened excitement around the move. The South Jersey Food Scene newsletter, which says it first reported the Turnersville news last month, framed the expansion as a milestone moment: simply knowing that Chick's is expanding after nearly seven decades with one location is news in itself, the newsletter notes.
What's Coming to the Menu in Gloucester County
The Turnersville location is expected to bring the full Chick's lineup to Gloucester County, including beef and chicken cheesesteaks, Buffalo chicken, hoagies, club sandwiches, salads, and a long list of deli sandwiches. Turkey specials, corned beef, chicken salad, and seafood salad round out the cold case, and breakfast runs all day with pork roll, egg and cheese sandwiches, and full breakfast platters, according to 42 Freeway's report.
One standout on the menu is the Chick's Special: hot pork topped with broccoli rabe and sharp provolone. The new location is also expected to add fryers, allowing the shop to offer fresh French fries and likely other fried appetizers that aren't part of the original Cherry Hill setup, the report notes.
A Cheesesteak Pedigree Decades in the Making
Chick's didn't earn its reputation overnight. Philadelphia Magazine awarded the shop its Best of Philly Cheesesteak title back in 2003 after a blind taste test of 15 contenders, with editor Larry Platt declaring that Chick's simply blew away the competition, according to Chick's Deli's own account of the honor.
More recently, Chick's Deli took the 2026 South Jersey Cheesesteak Championship for the second consecutive year, defeating Donkey's Place of Camden 431-344 in the final round of a field that started with 16 teams, as reported by the Courier-Post. The shop also won the paper's reader poll with 56% of the vote. Co-owner Kenneth Landis told the Courier-Post, “We're actively working on expanding the Chick's Deli brand, and we're excited to bring what we do to new locations in the near future.”
Longtime cheesesteak chroniclers have sung similar praise for years. NJ.com's Peter Genovese named Chick's Deli his pick for the best cheesesteak in New Jersey over the preceding decade back in 2015, and he later wrote in a 2018 NJ.com ranking that Chick's, tucked into an alley just off Route 70 in Cherry Hill, had been his number-one New Jersey cheesesteak joint for years.
Joining a Growing Sandwich Corridor
The expansion lands in an area that 42 Freeway describes as having become a sandwich hotspot in its own right, with the Route 42 corridor increasingly crowded with competition for South Jersey's lunch crowd. For now, the original Chick's Deli remains at 906 Township Lane in Cherry Hill, with the Turnersville spot planned for 5101 Route 42 on the Black Horse Pike in Washington Township.
Until buildout begins and a firm date is set, fans eager for a Gloucester County fix will have to keep making the drive to Cherry Hill. But after nearly seventy years as a one-shop operation, Chick's Deli's move into Turnersville marks a new chapter for one of South Jersey's most decorated sandwich counters.
