A 36-year-old Cherry Hill man died Thursday night after he was struck while crossing Route 38 near Longwood Avenue. Michael V. Mancuso was hit on the eastbound side of the road and later died, according to authorities. The driver was not injured and stayed at the scene to cooperate with investigators.

The crash happened just before 8 p.m. Thursday, according to NBC Philadelphia, which reported that Mancuso, of Cherry Hill, was crossing the highway when the vehicle struck him. As Patch reported, Mancuso was crossing the highway when he was hit and later died. NJ.com identified him as a 36-year-old resident of Cherry Hill.

Police said the driver remained at the scene and was not injured, cooperating with the investigation that followed. Route 38 was shut down in both directions while officers worked the scene, snarling traffic through the area as the investigation got underway, the station's report noted.

What is consistent across reporting is that the investigation remains active. Police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or has relevant information to contact the Cherry Hill Police Traffic Safety Unit at (856) 488-7820 or [email protected], per the same NBC Philadelphia account.

A Dangerous Stretch With a Grim History

In early August, an adult male pedestrian was struck and killed on westbound Route 38 near Chestnut Street at around 2:10 a.m., as reported by the Courier Post.

The Route 38 and Longwood Avenue corner has a documented history of pedestrian crashes stretching back years. In April 2021, 37-year-old Nichole Jackson of Pemberton was fatally struck there, and the Courier Post's reporting at the time noted that a 79-year-old man was killed at the same intersection in June 2019, with two other pedestrians surviving being hit there in August and October of that year. That 2021 report also noted the intersection has fast-food restaurants on two corners and connects to a jughandle used by eastbound Route 38 drivers.

Earlier still, a pedestrian was struck and killed on Route 38 near Longwood Avenue just before 10:30 p.m. on Aug. 10, 2017, according to 6ABC. Jackson's 2021 death was also notable because, per the Courier Post, she was the third person to die in Cherry Hill that year, following two earlier fatal crashes on Route 70.
