A man was rushed to a local hospital with multiple gunshot wounds after Chesapeake police responded to reports of gunfire early Monday, October 12, 2026, and officers took one person into custody at the scene. The shooting happened near the Bainbridge Commons Apartments, where a heavy police presence gathered as investigators worked to piece together what happened.
According to WAVY, officers responded to a report of shots fired at the intersection of Grady Street and Bainbridge Boulevard at approximately 5:25 a.m. Monday, October 12, 2026. Shore News Network reported that Chesapeake police arrived around 5:24 a.m. and found a wounded man at the scene.
When officers arrived, they discovered a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to a local hospital with injuries described as not life-threatening.
Conflicting Accounts on Charges and Custody
Police took one person into custody at the scene, though reporting on that person's identity and status diverges sharply. WAVY identified the individual as 18-year-old Nizay Akerion Shead and reported that he was charged with four counts of maliciously discharging a firearm or missile into an occupied building, one count of firearm use in the commission of a felony, and one count of stabbing or cutting with malicious intent. Shore News Network, however, reported that the Chesapeake Police Department had announced no charges in the case. Hoodline could not independently reconcile these two accounts, and the Chesapeake Police Department has not released the wounded man's identity.
Per the same account, police said there is currently no known threat to the public, and officials have not described what led to the gunfire or whether any relationship exists between the wounded man and the person taken into custody. The investigation remained ongoing as of Monday, with officers continuing to work the scene near Grady Street and Bainbridge Boulevard. A reporter on scene for the station observed at least six police vehicles still present.
Another Chesapeake Shooting Earlier This Year
Another Chesapeake Shooting Earlier This Year Monday's incident follows another Chesapeake shooting over the summer. On June 29 at around 3:35 p.m., according to WAVY's separate report, police responded to the 1100 block of Railroad Avenue after a dispute between two men escalated into one shooting the other, leaving the victim seriously injured. Officers arrested Donnell Simms in that case and charged him with malicious wounding and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony; he was being held at the Chesapeake Correctional Center without bond.
Chesapeake police have not released further details connecting the two cases, and the circumstances of Monday's shooting remain under investigation. The wounded man's identity has not been confirmed by the department.
