A motorcyclist suffered life-threatening injuries Thursday morning after his bike left the road and slammed into a pole at the intersection of Bainbridge Boulevard and Gregg Street in Chesapeake. Police officers responded to the scene around 6:51 a.m., and the man was rushed to a local hospital.
Police confirmed the rider's injuries were life-threatening, according to 13News Now. Investigators have not released details on what caused the motorcycle to leave the roadway before it struck the pole, and the station reports that police are still working to determine what led to the crash.
Third Serious Motorcycle Crash In Chesapeake This Year
Thursday's wreck is not an isolated incident for the city. Back in May, a motorcyclist was seriously injured on Interstate 64 westbound near the 464 Interchange after, per the preliminary investigation reported by WAVY.com, a motorcycle traveling at a high rate of speed struck the rear of a Honda Pilot. That driver was also transported to a local hospital with serious injuries.
A separate crash near the Veterans Bridge left another motorcyclist seriously hurt on a Tuesday afternoon, the same station reported. In that incident, a 57-year-old man riding the motorcycle was transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries, though it remained unclear at the time whether another vehicle was involved. Northbound lanes on the bridge were temporarily shut down during the investigation before reopening at 4:12 p.m.
Investigation Continues
No additional details have been released about the man injured Thursday, including his identity, age, or current condition beyond the life-threatening description given by police. The cause of the crash, whether another vehicle was involved, and whether any citations will be issued all remain open questions as the investigation continues.
Chesapeake Police has not yet released a public statement specific to Thursday's crash beyond confirming the basic details to 13News Now, though the department regularly posts updates on ongoing investigations through its Facebook page. Anyone with information about the Bainbridge Boulevard crash is encouraged to reach out to local authorities as the probe moves forward.
