A person was injured during a large gathering near Cushman Drive early Sunday, but officials have not disclosed the person’s identity or condition. The incident led to a separate encounter in which a Chester County deputy fired toward a fleeing suspect, 19-year-old Ty'Quavious Lamar Mcclurkin, who is now being held at the Chester County Detention Center.
The Chester County Sheriff's Office said deputies went to a large gathering in the area of Cushman Drive in Chester around 2:45 a.m. Sunday. After arriving, they heard a gunshot and located an injured person. Officials have not said who fired that shot or what happened beforehand.
The sheriff’s office said deputies identified Mcclurkin as a suspect during their investigation and gave him commands. He ran, prompting a foot pursuit during which a deputy fired in his direction. The account did not say whether Mcclurkin was injured.
Firearm Recovered, Suspect Held on Rock Hill Warrants
The sheriff’s office said deputies recovered a firearm and arrested Mcclurkin after the pursuit. He is being held at the Chester County Detention Center on outstanding warrants from Rock Hill. Officials said additional charges could follow the investigation.
The circumstances of the initial shooting remain unclear. Officials have not identified the injured person or released information about that person’s condition.
SLED Reviewing Deputy's Use of Force
The Chester County Sheriff's Office asked the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division to investigate both the deputy’s use of force and the earlier shooting. The deputy who fired has been placed on administrative duty while the investigation is pending.
How SLED handles these investigations
SLED says its goal in requested officer-involved-shooting cases is to conduct a thorough, independent criminal investigation, then summarize information gathered in a case-file report submitted to prosecutors, according to SLED. The agency reported 45 officer-involved shootings in South Carolina in 2025, according to its 2026 release.
SLED has also investigated a separate deputy-involved shooting in Chester County. In a May 18, 2021, release, the agency said a traffic-stop attempt at a closed restaurant in Richburg led to a chase and an exchange of gunfire between deputies and an armed driver, according to SLED. That was a separate incident from the Cushman Drive case.
This incident adds to a string of officer-involved shootings tracked across South Carolina this year. A shooting in Lexington in September, in which a 46-year-old man armed with a shotgun allegedly opened fire on two deputies who then returned fire, was logged as the state's 28th officer-involved shooting of 2026, according to South Carolina Public Radio. No deputies were injured in that incident, and the station reported the state recorded 45 total officer-involved shootings in 2025. In the Lexington case, the two deputies involved were placed on paid administrative leave while their department conducted an internal policy review.
