Christopher Titus is headlining Flappers Comedy Club in Burbank on Saturday, bringing his 11th stand-up special, Doomed to Repeat, to the club. The show, which the comedian has described as being about what is going on in the United States, has already toured through Texas and across the country over the summer, and it leans hard into Titus's take on life under the Trump administration.
The Burbank stop comes as Titus continues building out a comedy career that began with raw, personal material about his own upbringing. As reported by LAist, Titus has spent his career addressing his dysfunctional upbringing in the San Fernando Valley alongside material on love, marriage and parenting, before his more recent specials turned toward sharper political commentary, including direct criticism of President Donald Trump in Doomed to Repeat.
A Career Built on Messy, Personal Material
Titus has never shied away from uncomfortable territory onstage. The outlet's reporting notes he believes no personal or political topic is too messy for stand-up, a philosophy that traces back to his earliest work. That approach first reached a national audience through his autobiographical one-man show Norman Rockwell is Bleeding, which he adapted into the FOX sitcom Titus, which debuted on Fox in 2000, according to Wikipedia.
Titus parlayed that television success into further scriptwriting credentials, earning a Writers Guild of America Award nomination while the sitcom itself picked up an Emmy nomination during its Fox run, per Wiseguys Comedy Clubs.
Immigration Bit Draws Walkouts
One of the centerpieces of Doomed to Repeat is a signature routine about immigration, according to LAist's reporting. Titus has said his own ancestors have lived in America for 400 years, and he has acknowledged that people who disagree with his take on the subject have walked out of his shows.
That willingness to court controversy fits with Titus's broader output. Doomed to Repeat has been described as Titus's 11th special. His prior special, Carrying Monsters, was crafted as a direct companion piece to his debut, Norman Rockwell is Bleeding, according to the Raleigh Improv.
A Long-Term Comedy Goal
Titus has set a long-term goal of releasing 17 comedy specials over the course of his career. Carlin recorded 14 stand-up specials for HBO, with the first filmed in 1977, according to Wikipedia.
Beyond the club circuit, Titus also hosts The Titus Podcast, originally launched as The Armageddon Update, which has generated over 8 million downloads, per Wiseguys Comedy Clubs' account of his career.
Inside Flappers' Downtown Burbank Home
Flappers Comedy Club has anchored Downtown Burbank's entertainment scene since 2010, when co-founders Barbara Holliday and Dave Reinitz converted a 7,000-square-foot former Macaroni Grill location into a multi-stage comedy venue, according to Turner Techtronics. The project received an economic development loan from the City of Burbank as part of the buildout.
The club's main location is at 102 E. Magnolia Blvd, per Locations Hub. Flappers also runs Flappers University.
Hoodline previously covered the venue's ticket discounts for local comedy events back in 2018, underscoring Flappers' long-running role as a neighborhood entertainment draw.
Titus is set to take the Mainroom stage on Saturday, October 10.
