Clark High School went into lockdown Friday afternoon after a gunshot-detection system picked up possible gunfire near the Las Vegas campus, sending police to set up a perimeter in the surrounding neighborhood. No injuries had been reported as officers worked to investigate what triggered the alert.

According to KTNV, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officers set up a perimeter in the area of Tara Avenue and Foot Street as they worked to determine what had happened. The station reported that Metro police said no injuries had been reported at the time.

Inside the building, a teacher told the station they were in a classroom and safe while the lockdown played out. Channel 13 crews were in the area gathering information as the situation developed, per the same report.

Friday Night Football Plans Thrown Into Question

The timing of the alert complicated more than just the school day. Clark High School's football team was scheduled to play Durango High School at 6 p.m. Friday, a matchup also listed on the schedule published by News 3 Las Vegas. The school's coach said the game's start time could be pushed back because of the lockdown, the station's report noted.

A Campus With a History of Similar Scares

Friday's incident is not the first time gunfire reports have put Clark High School on alert, though none of the earlier episodes should be confused with what happened this time. In August 2023, Las Vegas police reported multiple shots fired in the 4500 block of Pennwood Avenue near the campus, with Metro telling FOX5 Las Vegas at the time that it was not an active shooter situation and that no injuries had been reported.

Another earlier report from 8 News Now described a lockdown at the school one Wednesday morning after gunfire was heard in the area, a lockdown that was later lifted that same morning. Separately, the Las Vegas Review-Journal has reported on a Clark High School student who was arrested for allegedly bringing a gun to campus, an incident in which the principal said there were no threats to the school or students.

Part of a Broader Pattern Across the Valley

Clark High School is not the only campus in the valley to see a lockdown tied to reports of gunfire or an armed suspect this year. In May, multiple schools in North Las Vegas were placed on lockdown after police responded to a report of an armed suspect near Legacy High School, according to 8 News Now. And in September 2025, News 3 Las Vegas reported that gunfire near Eldorado High School prompted a lockdown during a junior varsity football game while police searched for a man who had fired a handgun into the air.

Clark County and Las Vegas police have also worked to expand technology meant to catch gunfire quickly; a 2019 Review-Journal report described plans to broaden ShotSpotter coverage across the valley. More recently, Police1 reported that new weapons detectors and additional police presence were being added at Las Vegas-area schools as districts looked for ways to respond faster to potential threats.

As of Friday evening, authorities had not released further details on what set off the gunshot-detection alert near Clark High School, and the KTNV report said crews remained in the area gathering information.
