The case adds to a homicide count in Cleveland that has largely held steady this year even as violent crime trends downward in many other categories. The city recorded 48 homicides through June, the same total logged during the first half of 2025, according to Axios Cleveland. Rapes and robberies declined slightly in that same stretch while aggravated assaults ticked up, the outlet reported.
Homicides Down Sharply Across the Country and County
Nationally, the picture looks considerably brighter. Homicides fell 17.2% in the first half of 2026 compared with the same period last year among cities tracked by the Major Cities Chiefs Association, and robberies dropped 16.6%, per Axios Cleveland's reporting. A separate analysis by the Council on Criminal Justice found homicides down 18% across 30 reporting cities over the same span.
Cuyahoga County's own numbers have been trending downward for years. The county recorded 166 homicides in 2025, a nearly 7% decrease from 178 the previous year, Cleveland.com reported. That's a steep drop from the pandemic-era peak of nearly 250 homicides recorded in both 2020 and 2021, with the county logging 228 in 2023 before falling further last year.
Cleveland detectives specifically investigated 118 homicides in 2025, down nearly 8% from 128 the year before, according to the same Cleveland.com report, which noted that firearms were used in nearly all teen homicide incidents. Nationally, FBI Data Explorer figures showed murders dropping nearly 18% from October 2024 through September 2025.
No additional details about Pennington's death had been released as of the latest reporting. Anyone with information has not been directed to a specific tip line in the available reporting, and investigators continue to work the case.
