The William J. Clinton Presidential Library and Museum in Little Rock will shut its doors for two years starting in late 2027 to undergo a sweeping modernization, according to its director. The closure will make way for a new gallery dedicated to Hillary Rodham Clinton, an overhauled Clinton-Gore Administration exhibit, and a redesigned 50-acre park surrounding the complex.
The director shared the timeline at a Little Rock Rotary Club meeting on Tuesday, where a rendering of a planned new entry and community living room was shown to attendees, according to The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. The project marks the center's first modernization and expansion in two decades, according to Arkansas Business, which also reports the renovation is being led by architect Jeanne Gang and her firm, Studio Gang.
The push comes after the Gene and Jerry Jones Family announced a $10 million donation to support the modernization, with the Clinton Foundation noting the gift arrived “today” in its announcement. The foundation says the funding will go toward a state-of-the-art renovation of the Clinton-Gore Administration gallery alongside a new gallery and archive honoring Hillary Clinton's lifetime of public service.
A New Wing and a Reimagined Campus
Beyond the galleries, the Clinton Foundation says the project includes a new home for the Clinton School of Public Service and the foundation's Little Rock offices, plus what it describes as a sweeping redesign of the 50-acre Clinton Presidential Park into a community gathering space. The Arkansas Times reports the plans also call for a new welcome plaza linking the museum to the Choctaw Station building, additional community gathering spaces, trails, and connections to the planned 30 Crossing Park.
Other improvements outlined by the Arkansas Times include an enlarged special exhibition gallery housed in the Choctaw building alongside a new cafe, along with modernization of the Clinton Administration Gallery inside the museum itself. The broader 30 Crossing Park effort has its own funding boost: the city of Little Rock has announced a $30 million donation from the Bezos Earth Fund toward its construction, per the same outlet.
Two Decades of History, and a Look Ahead
The Clinton Presidential Center opened on the outskirts of downtown Little Rock in 2004, according to the Arkansas Advocate, and library officials first announced plans for an expansion including Hillary Clinton's personal archives back in 2024. Since opening, more than 5.5 million people have visited the library, the Advocate reports, and a 2025 study credited the facility with a $4.9 billion economic impact on the Little Rock and North Little Rock areas.
Multi-year closures are not unusual among presidential libraries undertaking major work. The Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum in West Branch, Iowa, closed for more than a year during a $20 million renovation, according to qconline.com. The Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum closed in July 2019 for what became its first major renovation in more than two decades, with the pandemic extending the process before it reopened to expanded visitor access on July 2, 2021, following a $29 million transformation, according to the Truman Library Institute. That project's fundraising campaign ultimately raised $39 million against an initial $25 million goal, and the reopened museum began requiring visitors to present timed tickets for admission.
For now, Little Rock residents and visitors have roughly a year before the doors close. Details on an exact closing date, a reopening timeline, and whether any portions of the center will remain accessible during construction have not yet been released.
