Dinosaur eggs nearly 18 inches long — the longest ever discovered — are coming to Columbia. The South Carolina State Museum will open Tiny Titans: Dinosaur Eggs & Babies on Jan. 23, 2027, bringing authentic eggs and nests collected from around the world alongside hands-on activities built for visitors of all ages.
According to the Post and Courier, the traveling exhibition explores the science behind dinosaur behavior, growth and development while introducing the people and discoveries that shaped what scientists know about dinosaur life. Dr. Scott Persons, the museum's curator of natural history, said the show features North America's largest collection of dinosaur eggs, a claim detailed by theitem.com.
Visitors will be able to touch real dinosaur bones, examine reconstructed nests and dig for eggs themselves, per the same report. The exhibition also includes life-like hatchling models and animated videos featuring dinosaur experts, giving younger visitors a way to picture what emerged from those ancient shells.
A Bowling-Ball Egg and the Longest Ever Found
Among the headline specimens is a bowling-ball-sized sauropod egg from Argentina, laid roughly 75 million years ago by a long-necked, plant-eating titanosaur. The exhibit also displays a large cluster of eggs laid by a duck-billed, plant-eating dinosaur, illustrating how different species nested and reproduced.
Then there are the record-holders: eggs measuring almost 18 inches long, the longest ever discovered, laid by a giant species of oviraptor — an ostrich-like dinosaur. The scale of these specimens, the report notes, underscores just how varied dinosaur reproduction could be, from compact clusters to eggs nearly the length of a toddler.
Natural History Gallery Gets a Dinosaur-Sized Upgrade
Tiny Titans arrives as part of broader additions and updates to the museum's Natural History gallery, expected to be completed by the end of 2026. Guests will encounter new cast skeletons of Deinonychus, Dimetrodon and Stegosaurus, along with a mural depicting an ancient dinosaur habitat and authentic South Carolina fossils.
The museum's own site notes it spans four floors of exhibitions covering art, cultural history, natural history, and science and technology, though scmuseum.org also states that some exhibitions on the second and third floors are currently closed due to ongoing gallery renovation work.
Fossil Fest Marks Opening Day
The museum will host Fossil Fest: Roar and Explore Day on the exhibition's opening date, Jan. 23, 2027. The event is set to feature a live bird experience with birds of prey, special activities, natural history experts and a member morning, with additional details to be announced.
Admission to Tiny Titans will be included with regular museum general admission or membership, so no separate ticket is required. General admission to the South Carolina State Museum costs $13 for adults, $11 for seniors and $10 for children ages 3 through 12, while children 2 and under get in free.
