A juvenile suffered a serious head injury after falling from the roof of a moving car in northeast Columbus late Thursday night, striking the asphalt in a parking lot near Chiller Lane and Sunbury Road. The crash happened just before 10:30 p.m. and left the teen hospitalized while police try to piece together exactly what led to the fall.
According to NBC4 WCMH-TV, the crash occurred in a parking lot east of 3599 Chiller Lane, near Sunbury Road, according to police. Investigators said an adult was driving a Toyota Avalon while the juvenile was voluntarily riding on its roof when the teen fell and hit the pavement.
The juvenile was taken to Mount Carmel East Hospital with the serious head injury, the station's report states. The driver remained at the scene, according to police, and no information about potential charges or citations has been released.
Investigation Still Open, No Word on Condition
Police have not released an update on the juvenile's condition, and the exact cause of the fall remains under investigation, per the same account. Anyone with information has been asked to contact the Accident Investigation Unit at 614-645-4767 or Central Ohio Crime Stoppers' anonymous tip line at 614-461-8477.
The Columbus case follows a string of similar incidents elsewhere in 2026 involving people riding on top of moving vehicles. In Trenton, Ohio, a 16-year-old died in August after falling off the top of a moving vehicle, as reported by WCPO. Police said two juveniles had been riding on the trunk of that vehicle and both fell off, with one killed and the other seriously injured.
A Pattern Playing Out Beyond Columbus
That Trenton teenager was later identified as Mason Young, 16, according to WHIO. A separate incident in South Boston this past summer also left a woman seriously injured after she fell from the roof of a moving vehicle, as detailed by Boston.com. Witnesses in that case recorded video showing the woman sitting on top of the vehicle as it moved.
Back in Columbus, police have not said whether the Thursday night crash will result in any charges, and the circumstances that led the teen onto the Avalon's roof remain unclear. The investigation continues as officers work to determine what happened in the moments before the fall.
