A 45-year-old Columbus woman is dead after officers found her suffering from major trauma to her body late Wednesday night, and the Franklin County Coroner's Office has since ruled her death a homicide. Amy Jo Ballard was already gone by the time medics reached her, and detectives still have not said what led up to the violence that killed her.
Columbus police officers responded around 11 p.m. on Wednesday to a call for an unknown complaint in the 1400 block of East Fulton Street, according to WSYX. Ballard had already been pronounced dead by medics before officers arrived, and the station reports she suffered major trauma to her body.
The station's report notes that the Franklin County Coroner's Office determined through an autopsy that Ballard's death was in fact a homicide. Detectives have not released any details about a possible motive, and it remains unclear what brought police to the East Fulton Street address in the first place.
Police Ask Public for Tips on Ballard Case
Investigators are now leaning on the public to help fill in the gaps. Police are urging anyone with information to contact the Columbus Police Homicide Unit at 614-645-4730 or Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at 614-461-TIPS (8477), per the same account.
The case lands in a year that has already proven deadlier than the last for Columbus. The city had recorded at least 50 homicide victims by late July 2026, compared with 46 at the same point the year before, according to WSYX. July alone brought 14 homicides, making it the deadliest month of the year so far based on Columbus Police Department data, and the largest age range among suspects this year has been 18 through 21.
A Reversal After a Record-Low Year
The rising toll marks a sharp turn from 2025, when Columbus logged its lowest homicide count in 16 years and violent crime overall was also on the decline, according to Axios Columbus. Police solved 83% of homicide cases that year. City officials have also voiced concern about a rise in domestic violence homicides, Axios reported, though the Ballard case has not been tied to that trend.
For now, Ballard's death remains an open case with no publicly disclosed motive or suspect information. Anyone who may have witnessed something near East Fulton Street or who has information about what happened to Ballard is asked to come forward to investigators.
