A 59-year-old Conroe woman died early Sunday morning after a pickup truck barreling the wrong way down Interstate 45 struck her SUV head-on near the Highway 105 exit. Emelia Muniz was pronounced dead at the scene, while the 20-year-old driver of the pickup was taken to a hospital.

According to woodlandsonline.com, Conroe Police Department Communications personnel received a call about a wrong-way driver at approximately 4:40 a.m. Minutes later, 911 callers reported a major crash near the Highway 105 exit, according to Click2Houston. Callers had described the pickup, identified as a Nissan Titan, speeding south in the northbound lanes of I-45 at around 100 miles per hour before it collided head-on with Muniz's vehicle, which was traveling northbound.

Muniz was driving a white SUV, described in reports as a Honda CR-V, when the Titan plowed into her car. She suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene, per the same woodlandsonline.com account. The pickup driver, whose identity has not been released, was taken to a local hospital and was reported to be in stable condition, police said.

Investigators Comb the Scene for Answers

The Conroe Police Department's Traffic Reconstruction Unit responded to the scene and opened an investigation into how the crash unfolded. The Montgomery County District Attorney's Vehicular Crimes Unit was also contacted and responded to assist, a step typically reserved for crashes involving a fatality.

Authorities are examining whether intoxication played a role in the crash, though no determination has been made public. The northbound main lanes of I-45 were shut down for hours while crews worked the scene before reopening, according to Click2Houston.

Not an Isolated Incident on Houston-Area Roads

The Conroe crash was one of two wrong-way wrecks reported in the Houston region the same morning. A separate crash on Houston's South Loop West near Tierwester Road, around 4:48 a.m., killed the wrong-way driver and critically injured a person riding in a Chevrolet Suburban, according to Click2Houston.

Wrong-way crashes remain rare compared to overall traffic incidents statewide. The Texas Department of Transportation has said such wrecks make up less than 1% of all crashes statewide, though officials note they are often severe.
