A 15-year-old girl was walking along a Converse road with no sidewalk Monday morning when a driver struck her from behind, according to the Converse Police Department. She was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and the driver remained at the scene, but no arrest was made and no citation was issued.
The girl was walking near Canterbury Lane and Kerry Brook Drive when she was hit, according to the Converse Police Department, as reported by KSAT. Police said the driver told officers that sun glare limited his visibility before he struck the teen. That account has not been independently verified, and it remains unclear why no citation followed.
The crash adds to a string of pedestrian close calls and collisions that have put Converse under scrutiny in recent months. The outlet's report notes that the driver stayed at the scene after the collision, cooperating with the responding officers rather than fleeing.
A Pattern of Pedestrian Danger in Converse
This is not the first time Converse has made headlines over road safety for people on foot. A 46-year-old cyclist was hit and critically injured in a hit-and-run on FM 78 in Converse in August, according to Hoodline's earlier coverage. Parents of students at IDEA Converse have also complained for weeks that the intersection of FM 1516 and Martinez Road/Binz-Engleman Road still feels unsafe even after TxDOT made changes there.
As of Oct. 16, KSAT observed a crosswalk painted at that intersection for students to cross Martinez Road, but none for crossing FM 1516 itself. A $68 million TxDOT project is underway to widen 4.6 miles of FM 1516 from two lanes to four, adding sidewalks and bike paths. Completion estimates for the project have varied between reports, with one citing late summer 2028 and another fall 2028.
Statewide Numbers Underscore the Risk
The danger facing pedestrians on roads without sidewalks is not unique to this one Converse street. Texas recorded 6,095 pedestrian-involved crashes statewide in 2024, resulting in 772 deaths and 1,455 serious injuries, per prior Hoodline reporting. Bexar County alone logged 190 traffic fatalities in 2025, the fourth-highest total among Texas counties.
Distance from a signal matters too. Planning documents out of Austin found that pedestrian crashes occurring more than a half-mile from a signalized crossing resulted in serious injury or death 43% of the time, compared with 22% for crashes within one-eighth of a mile, according to KVUE. That same audit found that incomplete or inconsistent crash data limits cities' ability to identify the most dangerous locations and direct infrastructure fixes to where they're needed most.
For now, the particulars of Monday's crash near Canterbury Lane and Kerry Brook Drive remain limited to what police have released. The girl's condition following her hospital visit has not been disclosed, and whether the investigation remains open is unknown.
