Raymundo Mesa Jr., 42, of Arbuckle, was arraigned Monday afternoon after his arrest in Yuba City. The Sacramento Bee reported, citing court records, that he faces felony charges of possessing a firearm and ammunition as a convicted felon, and a misdemeanor charge of resisting police. He is scheduled to return to court Oct. 21 for a preliminary hearing.

The Yuba City Police Department said a Sutter County Superior Court judge granted investigators’ request to increase bail and ordered Mesa held without bail at the Sutter County Jail. His Colusa County arrest warrant had listed bail at $50,000, the department said.

The arrest and investigation

The case stems from a Colusa County warrant related to unlawful firearm possession. Police said Mesa had been sought for more than six months. The warrant involved firearms described as a machine gun and a suppressor, the Sacramento Bee reported. On Thursday, Yuba City police investigators and the Yuba-Sutter Regional SWAT Team went to a home near the 1200 block of Payne Court to serve a search warrant targeting Mesa, whom police considered a wanted felon believed to possess firearms, according to the police department.

Police said Mesa left the property and entered a nearby vacant house. Officers obtained a search warrant for the house, and the search lasted several hours before Mesa fell through the ceiling from an attic hiding place, the department said. The Bee reported that officers used diversionary devices, chemical agents and a police dog while trying to get him to surrender.

Investigators found a loaded 10mm Glock 20 handgun and a discarded cellphone in the vacant house, according to the police department. Mesa was treated at a hospital for minor injuries and then booked into the Sutter County Jail, the department said. The Bee reported that he remained in custody Monday.

Statewide firearm-seizure data

Separately, California DOJ said its statewide Armed and Prohibited Persons System (APPS) program aided the department in seizing 1,437 firearms from illegally armed individuals in 2025, according to the California Department of Justice. The statewide figure does not establish a connection between Mesa’s case and the program.
