A collision at the intersection of Speedway Boulevard and Stone Avenue in Tucson has been linked to a shooting on the Pascua Yaqui reservation, according to police. One of the vehicles involved in the crash was reportedly transporting several of the shooting victims at the time of the wreck.
Tucson police said officers responded to the collision at Speedway and Stone, according to KVOA. Investigators determined that one of the vehicles involved in the crash was carrying a few of the shooting victims. KOLD similarly reported that a vehicle involved in the crash was transporting shooting victims to the hospital, per the Tucson Police Department.
Pascua Yaqui Police Take Over Case
Because the underlying shooting happened on the reservation, the Pasqua Yaqui Police Department took over the primary investigation, the station's report states. Tucson police have not released the identities of the victims or detailed the conditions of those involved, according to the same account. KOLD reported it had reached out to Pascua Yaqui officials for more details on the shooting itself and planned to update the story as more information becomes available.
No information about the exact shooting location, timeline, or circumstances leading up to the gunfire has been made public. It also remains unclear whether anyone has been arrested or cited in connection with the shooting or the crash that followed it.
Reservation Has Seen Shootings Before
The Pascua Yaqui reservation has been the scene of other shootings in past years, though those earlier cases are separate incidents and do not establish any pattern tied to this latest crash. In one previous case, three men were arrested in connection with a drive-by shooting on the reservation that left one man wounded, according to Tucson.com. That shooting occurred around 3:30 a.m. in the 4900 block of West Vai Sevoi, near South Camino de Oeste and West Tetakusim Road, and Pascua Yaqui police requested help from the Pima County Sheriff's Department's SWAT unit after believing suspects might have entered a home.
In a separate 2024 case, federal prosecutors charged then-18-year-old Anthony Rene Fimbres with assault with a deadly weapon over a shooting near Pascua Yaqui High, as reported by KOLD. That shooting was reported around 11:30 a.m. on Oct. 29, 2024, and no injuries were reported at the time.
No details have emerged connecting this week's crash and shooting to those earlier cases. For now, the extent of the injuries, the identities of those involved, and the circumstances that led to the shooting remain unknown as the Pasqua Yaqui Police Department continues to lead the investigation.
