Crystal River's 35th annual Scarecrow Festival, originally set for this Saturday, has been pushed back three weeks to Halloween night after city officials cited an unfavorable weather forecast for the weekend. The free family event, which typically draws food trucks, craft vendors, live music, games and fall photo spots to downtown Crystal River, will now unfold on October 31 instead.
According to the Tampa Bay 28, the postponement came straight from the city's mayor, and more than 50 craft vendors had already registered for the festival before the date change. Downtown Crystal River businesses plan to stay open throughout the rescheduled event, and organizers say scarecrow displays will still be set up around downtown, with light poles decorated for the occasion. The Citrus County Chronicle reported on Wednesday that the shift to October 31 was driven specifically by an inclement weather forecast for the original weekend.
The festival had originally been scheduled to run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. this Saturday, centered at Heritage Village on North Citrus Avenue, per Discover Crystal River. Instead of that daytime footprint, the rescheduled event will merge fall craft festival activities with Halloween trick-or-treating and the city's monthly Saturday Night in Town Square program, running from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., city event records show.
What Festival-Goers Can Still Expect
Even with the new date, the core of the Scarecrow Festival remains intact. The event will still offer a kids costume contest and a Jeep car show, alongside beer and wine, craft vendors and costumed crowds, per the original Tampa Bay 28 report. Tony's Produce is slated to bring its pumpkin display of more than 400 pumpkins and will sell pumpkins throughout the festival.
Live music is also expected to carry over into the evening via the Crystal River Nights concert series, which organizers say will continue immediately after the festival wraps in the town square. The October 10 concert slot had been booked to feature the Ridge Country Band opening for headliner Rick Lynn Band, a Nashville-based musician returning to his hometown, according to Discover Crystal River's event listings — though it remains unclear how the lineup will be affected by the move to Halloween night.
A Mayor's Call Amid a Packed Fall Calendar
The postponement announcement came from Crystal River Mayor Joe Meek, who secured a third term automatically after running unopposed ahead of the city's November 3 municipal election, according to Florida Politics. Day-to-day coordination of the festival and other public programming falls to Madeline Scarborough, the city's Community Engagement Director, whose Events & Marketing department handles municipal event production, per city administration records.
The rescheduling slots the Scarecrow Festival into an already busy autumn lineup for Crystal River. The city opened its fall season on October 3 with an inaugural Rocktoberfest concert featuring Jasmine Cain, and Discover Crystal River lists Art on the Avenue for October 16, ahead of the Stone Crab Jam in November. Nearby Inverness, meanwhile, is marking the entire month with its Cootertober celebration, a full slate of themed weekend markets across its court square, according to Discover Crystal River's regional event guide.
Why October Matters for Crystal River
Crystal River is a small town — just 3,396 residents as of the 2020 census, per Wikipedia — but its fall festivals serve as an economic bridge between two very different tourism seasons. The city's scallop season wraps in late summer, and autumn events like the Scarecrow Festival help sustain downtown foot traffic before winter's main draw arrives: the manatees.
Kings Bay maintains a year-round water temperature of 72 degrees Fahrenheit, creating a sanctuary where hundreds of migrating manatees begin gathering each November, as Hoodline previously reported. With the Scarecrow Festival now landing on Halloween night, just days before that manatee migration begins in earnest, Crystal River's calendar keeps the town's streets — and its storefronts — busy straight through the seasonal handoff.
