Connecticut's annual men's college ice hockey tournament is heading back to downtown Hartford, with UConn, Quinnipiac, Yale and Sacred Heart set to square off at PeoplesBank Arena for in-state bragging rights. The seventh edition of CT Ice runs January 29-30, 2027, marking the tournament's first trip back to Hartford since 2024.
According to the Hartford Courant, the four-team field will play four games across two days, with Yale facing Quinnipiac in the opening semifinal at 4 p.m. on January 29, followed by Sacred Heart taking on UConn at 7:30 p.m. that same night, as reported by WTNH. The consolation game is slated for 3:30 p.m. on January 30, with the championship to follow at 7 p.m. that evening.
The tournament's return to Hartford also marks its first time at a freshly renovated venue. PeoplesBank Arena reopened in October 2025 following a $145 million renovation, per Hartford Business Journal. The outlet notes that all four of Connecticut's Division I men's hockey programs will face off in the building as part of the January 29-30 slate.
A Tournament With Shifting Fortunes
CT Ice launched in 2020, and the state's four programs have traded the trophy in waves ever since. Sacred Heart claimed the inaugural title that year with a 4-1 win over Quinnipiac, the Hartford Courant reports. Quinnipiac then reeled off three consecutive championships before UConn took over, winning the last two titles.
The hosting rotation has moved around the state in recent seasons. The schools rotated hosting duties after the tournament's earlier run in Bridgeport, the Hartford Business Journal's report notes, with UConn hosting in 2024, Sacred Heart taking over for 2024-25, and Yale hosting the following season, according to UConn Athletics.
Coaches Look Ahead to a First-Class Event
UConn head coach Mike Cavanaugh said hosting the tournament at PeoplesBank Arena is an opportunity for Connecticut college hockey to grow and provide a first-class annual event, per the Hartford Courant. Quinnipiac coach Rand Pecknold echoed that sentiment, saying the move to the newly renovated arena reflects the tournament's growth and rising interest, and adding that he looked forward to another weekend showcasing Connecticut hockey.
Recent Title Runs Set the Stage
UConn enters the 2027 tournament as the two-time defending champion after beating Quinnipiac 4-2 in New Haven to capture the 2026 title, as reported by CT Insider. That win came one night after UConn topped Yale 5-2 to reach the championship game, according to UConn Athletics. Sacred Heart won last year's consolation game over Yale by a score of 3-2, CT Insider reported.
