A packed house and a line stretching out the door greeted Buena Vista, A Cuban Experience, as the new Cuban restaurant and bar celebrated its grand opening Thursday at 43–45 S. Main St. in downtown Phillipsburg. Co-owners Manny and Lourdes Montesino welcomed the standing-room-only crowd with Cuban classics, cocktails and a club-style atmosphere in a space the couple transformed from a former office into what organizers describe as a dining retreat with views of the Delaware River.
The celebration, held October 23, brought together more than 40 family members, friends, local officials and neighbors, according to TAPinto. The event featured food and drink specials, cocktail promotions, two raffles and six red tokens hidden under selected dining tables for guests to find. Lourdes Montesino said opening the restaurant has been “a new and exciting journey,” adding that she and her husband had expected to slow down at this stage but instead felt proud and excited by the community support, per the same outlet's account.
From Family Recipes to a Full Menu
Buena Vista bills itself as a Cuban culinary destination serving dishes rooted in family recipes. The menu includes Cuban sandwiches, media noche and pan con bistec alongside heartier plates like ropa vieja, lechón asado and picadillo. For dessert, the restaurant offers flan, tres leches cake and tropical fruit batidos, with house-made sangria among its recommended drinks, the report notes.
Behind the kitchen, Richard and Marlene work on Buena Vista's back-of-house team preparing the Cuban recipes, while Hendricks and Maria lead front-of-house service. Three of the Montesinos' four daughters pitched in during the grand opening itself, serving guests, waiting tables and taking orders as the dining room filled up, according to the article.
A Years-Long Path to Main Street
The restaurant's arrival caps a project that first surfaced publicly in February 2024, when lehighvalleylive.com reported that a Cuban restaurant and bar was planned for the bottom floor of the former SPIG USA office building. At that time, plans called for roughly 40 tables, a centralized eight-seat bar and an open floor design letting customers see into the kitchen. That reporting also indicated Manny Montesino had secured a liquor license from the Hilltop Cafe, though TAPinto's grand-opening coverage describes the license as purchased from Hilltop Bar — the two accounts differ on the exact source of the license.
Architect Ryan Welty led the structural transformation as project architect for RGW Architecture, while Nicole Montesino designed the restaurant's interior concept. Liza Jaramillo, who owns Lala Yummy, served as chef consultant during final construction, rounding out a team that helped turn the former office space into its current form.
Part of a Growing Downtown Portfolio
Buena Vista is the latest addition to a string of downtown Phillipsburg properties renovated by Manny and Lourdes Montesino, who arrived in the United States from Cuba in the late 1960s. The couple also owns Around Again, BCrafty Café and Sullivans Mercantile, and they recently purchased Towne Market, a long-standing local business slated for major renovations. The restaurant is expected to employ residents of Phillipsburg and surrounding areas.
During the ribbon-cutting, Lourdes Montesino thanked Mayor Randy Piazza Jr., Town Council President Keith Kennedy, council members and Bill Benz, along with the Urban Enterprise Zone, for organizing the event. She also thanked Susan and Malia of Norwescap for supporting her community initiatives.
