A 39-year-old Danville man died Wednesday night after his motorcycle slammed into the back of a pickup truck on Route 58 in Pittsylvania County, in a crash that left no charges pending as investigators continue to piece together what happened. Jonathan Thomas Phelps was wearing a helmet when he was killed, and the driver of the truck he struck was not hurt.
According to WSET, Virginia State Police said the crash occurred Wednesday at 10:18 p.m. at Route 58 and Grays Park Road, though WSLS reported the collision happened around 10:15 p.m. at the same intersection. Troopers described it as a two-vehicle crash that resulted in a fatality, and said Phelps was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators said a 2018 Honda Ridgeline had been traveling west on Route 58 before its driver used a crossover to head east. A 2026 Honda CBR motorcycle, also traveling east but at a high rate of speed, then struck the Ridgeline from behind, according to the WSET report. The Ridgeline driver was not injured in the impact.
Helmet Use, No Charges Filed
Authorities confirmed Phelps was wearing a safety helmet at the time of the crash, a detail noted in reporting by WDBJ7. Despite the protective gear, he died at the scene. State police said no charges are pending in connection with the crash, and the investigation remains active as troopers continue to examine the circumstances.
The crash adds to a string of fatal motorcycle wrecks reported in Pittsylvania County in recent years. In one earlier case detailed by the Chatham Star-Tribune, Virginia State Police investigated a single-vehicle crash in which a 2002 Harley Davidson ran off the left side of Childress Road, struck a ditch and overturned. That rider, identified as 52-year-old Stephen Lee Wingate of Ringgold, was transported to SOVAH Health in Danville, where he later died.
Investigation Continues
No further details have been released about road or weather conditions at the time of Wednesday's crash, and state police have not indicated when the investigation might conclude. For now, the case remains open, with troopers continuing to review the sequence of events that put the eastbound motorcycle and the crossing pickup truck on a collision course at Grays Park Road.
