A two-minute video filmed at a fall festival in Darien Commons has triggered an outside legal review at Darien Library and a separate investigation by the Norwalk NAACP, after a father says he watched a librarian's puppet interact with white children while seeming to ignore his 17-month-old son. West Haven resident Micah Whitaker recorded the moment on October 3 during a storytime session and posted it to TikTok three days later, where it has since drawn more than 4 million views.
The footage shows a woman holding a green puppet moving along a row of children at the event, which Whitaker and his family say left his son, Messiah Whitaker, without any interaction while nearby white children got attention from the puppet. According to ABC7 New York, the family said the puppeteer appeared to put the puppet away and then brought it back out to engage other children only after Messiah's parents had already begun walking away. The puppeteer is identified as one of Darien Library's librarians, and the library had organized the community event.
The storytime was part of the Pumpkin Parking Lot Party, a fall family gathering regularly hosted at Darien Commons, a shopping and residential complex in the Noroton Heights section of town. Darien Commons routinely partners with Darien Library on community storytime events, part of a broader calendar of family programming at the complex.
Librarian Placed on Leave as Law Firm Investigates
Darien Library Executive Director Kiera Parrott confirmed in a statement that the library has placed the staff member involved on administrative leave while an independent law firm conducts a comprehensive review. The library said it takes the allegations seriously and is committed to being welcoming, inclusive, and safe for patrons and their families, according to ABC7 New York, and said it remains in direct contact with the Whitaker family to work toward a resolution.
Per the NAACP, the librarian initially said she did not notice Messiah standing off to the side during the puppet routine. Investigators are now seeking additional video from other attendees that might show more of the interaction, as the station's report notes. The Norwalk chapter of the NAACP, which oversees civil rights advocacy across lower Fairfield County including Norwalk and Darien, has opened its own investigation into the incident.
Mark McElveen, speaking on the matter, said that if the child was ignored, that was shameful and troubling. Whitaker told ABC7 New York that seeing the situation unfold broke him.
Viral Reach Brings Celebrity Attention and a GoFundMe
The video's spread has been dramatic: within a week it had drawn more than 650,000 likes and 19,000 comments on TikTok, according to Patch. Children's entertainer and educator Rachel Accurso, widely known online as Ms. Rachel, publicly commented on the video offering to meet Messiah and introduce him to her own puppet, Herbie — a gesture that drew thousands of likes amid messages of solidarity from parents nationwide, per Patch.
Whitaker also created a GoFundMe titled Help Micah's Son Make a Joyful Memory, aiming to send his family to Disney World. The campaign, which Patch reports raised more than $3,400 within days, stated its goal was to create a positive memory for Messiah rather than seek pity.
A Regional Library in a Town With Little Diversity
Darien Library functions as a regional draw well beyond its hometown. Testimony before the Connecticut General Assembly shows the library circulates more books and materials to non-residents through state-backed inter-library programs than any other local library in the state, with patrons frequently coming from neighboring Norwalk and Stamford. The library operates as a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofit led by Parrott and overseen by an independent Board of Trustees, according to ProPublica records.
The town itself looks quite different from the communities that feed into its library system. U.S. Census Bureau data released in 2026 put Darien's population at an estimated 21,936 in 2024, with Black or African American residents making up approximately 0.8% of the community, while non-Hispanic white residents account for more than 80%. Census figures also show Darien is among the wealthiest municipalities in Fairfield County, with a median household income of $250,001 and per capita income exceeding $121,000 in 2024 — more than double the national median.
No findings from either the library's independent legal review or the NAACP's investigation have been announced. The library has not said when its review will conclude.
