A preschool-age girl was found wandering alone before dawn Tuesday on a street in Northwest Washington, and police are now asking the public for help figuring out who she is and where her family can be found. Officers came across the child around 3:18 a.m. in the 1400 block of Fairmont Street, with no adult in sight.
Police believe the girl is between four and five years old, according to FOX 5 DC. She is described as a Black female, approximately 3 feet tall and weighing between 40 and 50 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. When officers found her, she was wearing a red shirt, tan pants, and pink-and-black shoes.
Police Ask Public to Help Reunite Girl With Family
Investigators have not said how the girl ended up alone on Fairmont Street or whether she has given officers any information about herself. Police are urging anyone who recognizes her, or who knows where her family might be, to call 202-576-6768. The details released so far, from the Metropolitan Police Department, describe only her approximate age, size, and the clothing she had on when she was located.
This is not the first time this year that D.C. police have turned to the public to identify a young child found alone. In June, officers searched for the family of a girl believed to be about 6 years old who was found in the 1300 block of Southern Avenue SE around 1:45 a.m., according to DC News Now. That child was described as weighing 50 to 60 pounds and standing 3 to 3 feet 5 inches tall, with black hair and brown eyes, and was found wearing a blue shirt, pink Crocs, and black pants with pink stripes. Police at the time noted she may have been nonverbal.
Previous Case Ended With Family Reunion
In that earlier case, the outlet reported the child was reunited with her family late that same Tuesday night, hours after investigators put out the call for help. It is not yet known whether the girl found on Fairmont Street will be identified as quickly, and police have not released any additional details beyond her description and the tip line.
Anyone with information about the girl's identity or where her family can be located is asked to contact police at the number listed above. No other contact method or case number has been made public.
