A ramp to Interstate 85 at Croasdaile Drive in northwest Durham was shut down after a deadly crash involving what appeared to be a scooter. Durham police taped off the ramp near Hillandale Road as they investigated, leaving the crossing closed to traffic while officers worked the scene.
According to WRAL, the crash happened on the ramp where it intersects with Croasdaile Drive near Hillandale Road, prompting Durham police to shut down the ramp and tape it off while they investigated. The station reported that its breaking-news tracker spotted a body next to what appeared to be a scooter at the scene.
Details Remain Limited as Investigation Continues
The station said it was still working to learn the circumstances behind the crash as of Friday morning and indicated it would update the story once more information became available. No further details on the person involved, the timing of the crash, or how it occurred have been reported.
This is at least the second deadly crash reported along I-85 in Durham County this year. In May, a fiery two-vehicle crash near the I-85/I-885 interchange killed one driver, sent the other to the hospital, and closed that ramp for several hours, according to CBS17. Days later, another crash killed two people after a car struck a tree along I-85 in Durham County, closing the interstate's northbound lanes, as noted by ABC11 Raleigh-Durham.
A Broader Pattern on North Carolina Roads
Durham's stretch of I-85 has seen a string of serious wrecks this year, and state health officials point to the scale of the problem statewide. The North Carolina Division of Public Health notes on its Injury Data Dashboard that thousands of Americans are involved every day in motor-vehicle crashes on public roadways that result in injury or death.
For now, the circumstances surrounding Friday's crash at Croasdaile Drive remain unclear, and it has not been confirmed whether the ramp has reopened to traffic. Hoodline will share additional details on the Durham crash as they become available.
