An unidentified man was found dead inside a home on the 300 block of Union Baptist Road in Aiken on Thursday, his body already in an advanced stage of decomposition by the time authorities arrived. The Aiken County Coroner's Office responded to the residence at 4:13 p.m. to investigate, and the man's identity and cause of death remained unknown as of Thursday.

Coroner's Office Responds to Union Baptist Road

According to the Post and Courier, the coroner's office arrived at the Union Baptist Road address Thursday afternoon after the man's body was discovered inside. As reported by WJBF, the body was found in an advanced stage of decomposition, and the immediate cause of death had not been determined. That finding is pending anthropology and pathology examinations, the station reports.

The Aiken County Coroner's Office and the Aiken County Sheriff's Office are continuing to investigate, per the same account. Coroner Darryl Ables said investigators are awaiting forensic examinations to help determine the man's identity and how he died, according to The Augusta Press. No further details about the man or the circumstances surrounding the discovery have been released.

A Pattern of Unresolved Discoveries in the County

This is not the first time this year that Aiken County authorities have had to piece together the identity of someone found dead in the community. Last September, a body was found in the 1200 block of Williston Road, according to WRDW. Coroner Ables said in that case the body of a Black male was found inside an abandoned vehicle shortly before 11 a.m., and the homeowner gave a presumptive identification of the deceased as a homeless man known to be in the area.

In that earlier case, officials said the death did not appear suspicious and foul play was not suspected, with an autopsy scheduled for the following week in Newberry, the station reported. Positive identification in that incident was pending fingerprint analysis. No such determinations have been made public yet in Thursday's case on Union Baptist Road, where the cause and manner of death remain unresolved pending the forensic exams.
