A new taqueria is taking shape on South Woodland Boulevard in DeLand, and it's coming from a family already known to locals for their coffee. La Flama Taqueria is planned for 2731 S Woodland Blvd, with owner Jose Valverde targeting an opening in late October or early November.

The restaurant is being opened by the family behind Terra Cafe Specialty Coffee, according to WhatNow, which confirmed the opening news with co-owner Jose Valverde. Terra Cafe is operated by that same family, and Valverde told the outlet that La Flama will not be a normal taqueria. The DeLand community page had earlier announced the project in a Facebook post, describing it as an upcoming taqueria from the family behind Terra Cafe Specialty Coffee.

Valverde described La Flama Taqueria as a family business involving his wife and their 10 children, according to businessdebut.com. The menu is set to include tacos with proteins such as picanha, pastor, ribeye, lengua and shrimp, along with vegetarian options, per the same account. The site also reports that fish, shrimp, picanha, ribeye, pork and a vegetable option are planned, with the restaurant making its tortillas in-house.

Grass-Fed Meats and a Free Salsa Bar

Quality is a selling point for the new spot, which plans to serve grass-fed meats sourced locally in Florida. The business is aiming to source pork and beef from farms that focus on animal welfare and from Florida producers when possible, the report notes. Guests will order at the counter, then move along a line where they can see the meats cooking before reaching a free salsa stand stocked with a range of salsa and vegetables at no extra charge.

Thirst will be covered too: the taqueria plans to offer aguas frescas with one free refill. Beer and wine service is also in the works, though that part of the plan depends on the pace of the licensing process, and the business may delay its beer-and-wine license after opening rather than wait to launch.

Space, Seating and Target Hours

The restaurant will occupy about 2,500 square feet with seating for roughly 65 guests. La Flama Taqueria plans to open seven days a week, with targeted hours of 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday and later hours until 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, subject to plaza approval.

With a build-your-own-plate style service line, a no-charge salsa station and a sprawling family behind the counter, La Flama Taqueria is shaping up to be one of DeLand's more ambitious restaurant debuts this fall. For now, the late October or early November window is the only timeline on the table, and diners on South Woodland Boulevard will have to wait for the doors to officially open.
