Denton police are searching for a missing woman identified as Linda, who has dementia.

The City of Denton Police Department has asked anyone who sees Linda to call 911 immediately.

Denton's monthlong “Drone as a First Responder” pilot program began October 1 and uses Skydio X10 drones operated by certified pilots. The city also has an existing joint drone program involving police and fire departments.

Why Minutes Matter When Dementia Patients Wander

Searches like this one carry added urgency because of how common and how dangerous wandering can be for people with dementia. An estimated six out of 10 people living with Alzheimer's disease or other forms of dementia will wander at least once during their illness, often repeatedly, according to the Alzheimer's Association. The organization advises families to call 911 and request emergency help if a person with memory loss is not located within 15 minutes of going missing.

The stakes of that advice are stark. Research published by Cleveland Clinic Health Essentials indicates that roughly half of missing individuals with Alzheimer's disease or dementia who are not found within 24 hours of wandering suffer severe physical injury or death.

Why There's No Highway Alert Yet

Texas has operated a statewide Silver Alert system since 2007 under Texas Government Code Section 411.382, allowing authorities to broadcast public notices for missing senior citizens or people with Alzheimer's disease. But before state authorities can issue one, Texas Department of Public Safety rules require local law enforcement to first obtain documentation from a medical professional confirming the missing person's diagnosed impairment.

State regulations activate dynamic message signs during a Silver Alert only when confirmed vehicle details are available and the missing person was driving, per the Texas Department of Public Safety.

A Pattern of Vulnerable Searches in Denton

Hoodline previously reported on a young man with autism found safe in November 2024 after community members acted quickly.

Anyone with information on Linda's whereabouts is urged to call 911 right away.
