A Denver jury has convicted Ashley Stone of murder for opening fire on a car during a school pickup confrontation in Green Valley Ranch last year, a shooting that killed 40-year-old Calvin Fenner and left a woman and two children critically injured. Stone, now 40, was found guilty on 10 charges and is scheduled to appear at a sentencing hearing next month.
Jury Delivers Guilty Verdicts on Ten Counts
According to The Denver Post, the jury found Stone guilty of 10 charges stemming from the April 2025 shooting, including three counts of attempted second-degree murder, three counts of attempted first-degree murder with extreme indifference and two counts of child abuse. Denver court records cited by the outlet say the jury also found Stone guilty of second-degree murder and first-degree murder with extreme indifference. Stone is scheduled to appear at a sentencing hearing on November 25, court records show.
The case traces back to a shooting in April 2025, when Stone and David Bland were arrested on suspicion of shooting and killing Fenner, who was driving a car carrying Bland’s ex-girlfriend and her two children, ages 10 and 5. The Denver Post’s original report on the shooting noted that Stone and the woman had several fights throughout the school year, which police attributed to Stone’s belief that the woman was still romantically involved with Bland.
A School Pickup Turns Deadly
The confrontation began at the woman’s first school pickup of the day, when Stone pulled up next to her car, gave her a dirty look, threw a water bottle at her and brandished a gun, police said. After the woman picked up her second child, she heard gunshots near East 42nd Avenue and North Malaya Street. Investigators believe both Stone and Bland fired at the car during the pursuit.
The shooting caused the vehicle to crash and roll near East 38th Avenue and North Odessa Street, where Fenner was killed. Paramedics took the woman and her two children to the hospital with critical injuries, according to the same Denver Post reporting from April 2025.
Second Defendant Still Awaiting Trial
As of Thursday, a trial date for Bland had not been set, the newspaper’s coverage of the verdict noted. The shooting occurred amid a broader decline in homicides citywide; Denver police said at the time it marked the city’s 11th homicide of the year, a 59% decrease from the 27 homicides reported during the same period the previous year, according to the Denver Gazette.
Earlier reporting from CBS Colorado identified Stone as 38 and Bland as 39 at the time of their arrests in 2025, while the Denver Post’s coverage of this week’s verdict lists Stone as 40 and Bland as 41. Stone’s sentencing hearing next month will determine the consequences she faces for the convictions, though the case against Bland remains pending with no trial date yet set.
