Adams County Sheriff's deputies were involved in a shooting near 96th Avenue and Interstate 76 on Monday morning, prompting the closure of multiple roads near the scene.
The Adams County Sheriff's Office confirmed the shooting happened in the area of East 96th Avenue just west of I-76, according to 9News. As part of the response, deputies closed 96th Avenue at Brighton Road, shut the westbound I-76 off-ramp, blocked the I-76 frontage road between 104th Avenue and 88th Avenue, and closed 96th Avenue east of I-76 at the roundabout, according to CBS Colorado. Deputies asked the public to avoid the area entirely while the scene was being worked, the station reported.
The road closures affected East 96th Avenue near I-76.
It is not yet clear what led to Monday's contact between deputies and the suspect near I-76, or whether any deputies were hurt in the exchange. Colorado's Law Enforcement Integrity Act requires all peace officers interacting with the public to wear and activate body-worn cameras, with a failure to record creating what the ACLU of Colorado describes as a “rebuttable presumption” of officer misconduct.
What Happens Next Under Colorado Law
What Happens Next Under Colorado Law Colorado law requires a public review of any officer-involved shooting resulting in serious bodily injury. In the 17th Judicial District, that means the case goes to the Critical Incident Response Team, known as CIRT, which draws investigators from outside departments specifically to keep the review objective, according to the 17th Judicial District District Attorney's Office. Once that investigation wraps, District Attorney Brian Mason is legally required to issue a public decision letter laying out his findings and whether any criminal charges against the involved deputies are warranted.
Hoodline reported on October 6, 2026, that District Attorney Brian Mason had decided not to bring charges against an Adams County deputy. Mason found the force unconventional but not unreasonable or excessive, and said its degree was consistent with minimizing injury to others.
A Department Already Under Strain
Monday's shooting is the latest in a string of violent encounters for the Adams County Sheriff's Office this year. In January, a deputy suffered multiple gunshot wounds in a stairwell and a suspect was killed during a weapons disturbance call at the Caraway Apartments on Broadway, an incident CBS News reported at the time.
The sheriff's office is led by Sheriff Gene Claps.
No further details on the suspect's identity or condition in Monday's I-76 shooting have been released, and the open questions around what precipitated the encounter remain unanswered for now. Hoodline will update this story as the CIRT investigation and any findings from the District Attorney's office become public.
