A 20-year-old man was left with life-threatening injuries Friday night after his dirt bike collided with a car in East Baltimore, shutting down part of Greenmount Avenue as police swarmed the scene. Officers found him suffering from serious injuries at the crash site, and the car involved never left.

Police responded around 8:05 p.m. to the 2400 block of Greenmount Avenue for what was described as a serious crash, according to Fox Baltimore. The station reported that the man was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after his dirt bike collided with a car, and that the vehicle involved remained at the scene as investigators worked to piece together what happened. Baltimore's Traffic Investigation Unit responded and is now investigating, per the same report.

Separately, Fox Baltimore also reported on an East Baltimore dirt bike and vehicle crash near Lake Avenue and Belair Road in the Belair-Edison neighborhood, in which the rider's injuries were described as non-life-threatening and the time of the crash was listed as unclear.

A Recurring Flashpoint on Baltimore Streets

More than 200 dirt bikers were reported in the 3100 block of Reisterstown Road in June.

Other crashes have turned fatal. A 37-year-old man riding a dirt bike was killed in a collision with an SUV on a Tuesday evening in Northwest Baltimore, with officers responding around 8:50 p.m. to the 3000 block of Liberty Heights Avenue, where the rider was pronounced dead at the scene, according to CBS News Baltimore. Police said the SUV driver in that crash will not face charges. A separate deadly crash downtown on July 18, 2025, at the intersection of Pratt and Gay streets around 9:01 p.m., left a 47-year-old man dead at the scene, as reported by WMAR-2 News.

Police Ramp Up Enforcement After Deadly Crash

Baltimore City Police said they are ramping up dirt bike enforcement citywide in the aftermath of the fatal Northwest Baltimore crash, according to CBS News Baltimore's reporting. The department has also pointed to its broader enforcement record: since January 2023, officers have seized 83 illegal dirt bikes across Baltimore City, according to a statement from the Baltimore Police Department. Rather than chasing riders, officers increasingly rely on surveillance tools, including drones and air support, to track down illegal off-road vehicles.

The enforcement push sits atop a decades-old cultural tradition. For generations, dirt biking has been woven into Baltimore's Black culture, with riders gathering on bikes and ATVs across the city, according to WYPR. The nonprofit B360 has taught 14,000 kids through legal riding programs since its founding, and in July the group joined other riders in a peace walk calling for investment and dialogue among police, city officials and the riding community. B360 has already secured $3 million in federal funding toward a proposed dirt-bike park meant to give riders a legal place to ride, WYPR reported.

The Baltimore Sun reported that a 20-year-old man was critically injured in Friday's Greenmount Avenue crash. The Traffic Investigation Unit's review of the crash remains ongoing.
