Southern California is finally getting its own Sierra store, and San Marcos is the city landing it first. The off-price outdoor retailer, owned by the same company behind TJ Maxx, Marshalls and HomeGoods, will open a location at 177 South Las Posas Road on Nov. 14, bringing discounted ski gear, hiking boots and activewear to a region that previously had no Sierra store anywhere nearby.

Until now, the closest Sierra store to San Marcos sat in Visalia, roughly 300 miles north, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. Sierra is owned by The TJX Companies, the same corporate parent that operates TJ Maxx, Marshalls and HomeGoods. The new San Marcos store will sit inside the Grand Plaza shopping center, giving San Diego County shoppers a local Sierra option.

The new location will open with an 8 a.m. celebration on Nov. 14 that includes item giveaways and a gift-card treasure hunt, the newspaper reported. Sierra sells snow gear, outdoor goods and fitness apparel, along with camping, fishing and sporting equipment, workout outfits and casual activewear, all typically priced below department-store and boutique rates.

Why TJX Picked San Marcos

Jill Tully, Sierra's vice president of marketing, said Sierra is the only off-price retailer dedicated to active and outdoor merchandise, offering top brands and quality gear at value prices, per the same report. San Marcos is also near Ridgeline Trailhead.

The pitch leans heavily on price comparisons. Black Diamond backcountry skis, built with an engineered paulownia wood core manufactured in Austria, run about $380 at Sierra, versus roughly $1,150 for similar skis at REI. Giro's men's Latch mountain-biking shoes cost around $60 at Sierra compared with about $160 elsewhere, according to the same company figures cited by the Union-Tribune.

A Small but Growing California Presence

Before the San Marcos opening, Sierra had only a handful of stores in California. The chain's broader expansion has moved steadily up the West Coast in recent years. Sierra opened a 20,000-square-foot store in Roseville on Oct. 25, 2025, marking its third location in the Sacramento region after recently opening stores in Davis and South Lake Tahoe, according to The Sacramento Bee. That outlet also reported that Sierra prices goods 20% to 60% below department and specialty store rates companywide.

Nationally, Sierra operates more than 100 stores and the sierra.com website. The chain joined the TJX family in 2012 and changed its name from Sierra Trading Post in 2018. TJX's filing also shows the company expects to open 24 new Sierra stores in fiscal 2027, continuing an expansion pace that follows the brand's 100th store opening in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, in 2024, as announced via PR Newswire.

TJX's broader financial results help explain the push. The company posted a 5% increase in consolidated comparable-store sales during the fourth quarter of fiscal 2025, with net sales reaching $16.4 billion for that quarter, according to SGB Media Online. TJX had planned for consolidated comparable-store sales to rise 2% to 3% for the full fiscal 2026 year, the outlet reported. For San Marcos shoppers, the arithmetic is simpler: a discount outdoor retailer is finally setting up shop close to home instead of hundreds of miles away.
