Two people were hospitalized following a double shooting in the Longwood section of the Bronx, and police say two persons of interest have already been taken into custody in connection with the gunfire. Details on how the victims were wounded, their conditions, and what led up to the shooting have not been released as investigators continue piecing together what happened.
News of the shooting was reported by CBS News New York, which reported that police were searching for a shooter. Longwood falls under the jurisdiction of the NYPD's 41st Precinct, headquartered at 1035 Longwood Avenue, which also covers the neighboring community of Hunts Point and the commercial strip along Southern Boulevard, according to the NYPD. NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln is a 362-bed municipal facility that runs the busiest Level 1 Trauma Center in the northeast region with 144,000 emergency department visits a year.
A Neighborhood With Recent Scars
This latest shooting lands in a neighborhood still processing a string of violent incidents over recent months. A girl was grazed in the ear, and a 15-year-old was arrested.
Just last month, a 29-year-old man died at Lincoln Hospital after being shot in the chest near 1275 Lafayette Avenue in adjacent Hunts Point, a case Hoodline reported fell within the same 41st Precinct command. The precinct itself carries a storied, troubled history, having earned the nickname “Fort Apache” in the 1970s while stationed on Simpson Street amid extreme crime and arson rates in the South Bronx, before relocating to its current Longwood Avenue facility in 1993.
Citywide Declines Clash With Local Reality
The Longwood shooting comes even as New York City as a whole has posted historic improvements in gun violence. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch announced earlier this month that the city recorded 489 shooting incidents, 594 shooting victims, and 203 murders during the first nine months of 2026, surpassing the record lows set the previous year.
Still, the Longwood shooting underscores that citywide trends do not necessarily describe conditions on every individual block, even as official statistics trend in a positive direction.
What Happens Next for the Persons of Interest
It remains unclear what charges, if any, will be filed against the two persons of interest now in custody, or what role each may have played in the shooting. If investigators recover an illegal firearm and prosecutors pursue weapons charges, New York Penal Law § 265.03, Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree, applies to unlawfully possessing a loaded firearm outside a home or business and is classified as a Class C violent felony carrying a mandatory minimum of 3.5 years and up to 15 years in state prison, according to the New York State Senate.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact NYPD Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS. The program, run alongside the New York City Police Foundation, offers rewards of up to $3,500 for information leading to an arrest and indictment in violent felony cases. Investigators have not said whether they believe additional suspects remain at large or whether the two people hospitalized are expected to survive their injuries.
