Downtown Akron's biggest free family Halloween party is back for a fifth year, with organizers planning trick-or-treating, a costume contest and a spooky train ride through Lock 3 and Lock 4 on Saturday, October 17, 2026, from 4 to 7 p.m. The Downtown Akron Fall Fest has grown into one of the city's signature autumn traditions, drawing roughly 3,000 people last year, according to the event website.

The Downtown Akron Partnership presents the festival, which centers on trick-or-treating along Main Street, free crafts and activities, food vendors, a costume contest and music from DJ Vinnie G, according to Cleveland.com. Kids can also hop aboard Spooky Express train rides that ferry them to hidden trick-or-treat stations, and wander the grounds to meet mad scientists and other costumed characters roaming the park, the outlet reports. The event takes place at Lock 3 and Lock 4, located at 103 S. High St.

The festival has expanded rapidly since its early days. The 2nd Annual Downtown Akron Fall Fest in 2023 drew about 1,500 visitors across 19 trick-or-treat stations, and the Downtown Akron Partnership now reports nearly 7,000 children and families have attended the event combined over the past three years. For families managing food allergies, participating trick-or-treat stations along Main Street will offer nonedible trinkets like pencils and temporary tattoos, in keeping with the national Teal Pumpkin Project, the partnership notes.

A Newly Transformed Park as the Backdrop

This year's festival unfolds inside a park that looks nothing like it did a few years ago. Lock 3 reopened in November 2024 after a $17 million overhaul under the Akron Civic Commons 2.0 initiative, a project that added the Maynard Performance Pavilion, landscaped gardens and direct access to the Towpath Trail, according to the same account from Signal Akron referenced in prior Hoodline coverage of the park's revival. The renovated space has since hosted a run of downtown gatherings, including a summer salsa festival and a multi-day pizza festival.

The park is also gaining new public art just as Fall Fest arrives. A 17-foot sculpture made from recycled Goodyear Racing tires by Guggenheim Fellow Chakaia Booker is scheduled for installation near the Main Street entrance to Lock 3 in late October 2026, per prior Hoodline reporting. The Downtown Akron Partnership operates alongside the Downtown Akron Development Corporation, an entity the City of Akron set up in 2025 to drive business revitalization and support small-business grants in the core.

Sponsors Bring Transit Buses and Costume Prizes

A wide bench of sponsors is backing this year's event. The Summit County Prosecutor's Office and Buckeye State Credit Union are providing community advocate sponsorships, while BRC Exterior Cleaning Solutions is sponsoring the costume contest. Additional support comes from the City of Akron, Lock 3, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the Ohio Arts Council, the GAR Foundation, the Akron Community Foundation, Akron METRO RTA and the Akron Children's Museum.

Akron METRO RTA has previously brought its “Wizard of Bus” — an extra-long vehicle outfitted with themed walk-through exhibits — to Main Street for the festival, giving sponsors a hands-on role in the family programming. Businesses and organizations interested in sponsorship opportunities can contact the Downtown Akron Partnership, and community members can sign up online to volunteer for the event.

Parking and the Road to Citywide Trick-or-Treat Night

Visitors driving downtown have several parking deck options close to the festival grounds: the State Street Deck at 51 W. State St., the Summit County Deck at 200 S. High St., the Cascade Deck at 10 W. Mill St. and the CitiCenter Deck at 132 S. High St.

The Fall Fest's October 17 date lands two weeks ahead of Akron's official neighborhood Trick or Treat Night, which City Council Ordinance 419-2008 sets for the last Saturday of October from 5 to 7 p.m., according to the City of Akron. Once the fall season wraps, Lock 3 will shift into its winter configuration on November 27 for the annual Winterblast season, bringing two outdoor ice-skating rinks, ice bumper cars and historic department store holiday displays through mid-February, per the City of Akron. The city's Recreation and Parks division will also host the 39th annual Illuminated Holiday Parade through downtown on November 27, continuing the Main Street corridor's run of civic celebrations into the holidays.
