One person died after being electrocuted at a construction site in downtown Austin on Friday afternoon, according to the Austin Fire Department. A second person at the scene was found down but safe, and emergency crews needed a specialized truck and a police escort just to reach them.

Austin police received a check welfare call at approximately 2:41 p.m. local time, as reported by KXAN Austin. The construction site was located on Reserve Road. One person was pronounced dead at the scene, police said, while the other person was evaluated by Austin-Travis County EMS.

Getting to the two people trapped at the site was not simple. Austin Energy had to de-energize a line that ran very close to both of them before crews could safely approach, per the Austin Fire Department. A patient was reported inaccessible for an extended period of time, according to Christa Stedman.

A Scramble To Reach Two People Trapped Near Live Power Lines

The first Austin Energy truck sent to the scene turned out to be too small for the job, so crews called in a larger second truck, the fire department said. That bigger vehicle received a police escort to help it reach the site faster. A ladder truck equipped with a bucket ultimately retrieved both the person who had died and the person who survived.

KXAN reported that the second person did not require transport to the hospital, attributing that detail to Christa Stedman. The station said it reached out to Austin Energy for more information and planned to update its reporting once it heard back.

Austin's Rules On Keeping New Construction Away From Power Lines

The circumstances that led to the electrocution have not been established, but Austin has specific rules meant to keep construction workers away from live distribution lines. A 2021 Austin Energy rule requires at least 15 feet between new buildings and distribution lines, a five-foot increase over the previous standard, according to the Austin Monitor. That rule applies to all new construction, including accessory dwelling units, home expansions and minor work like new porches, while existing buildings are grandfathered in under the older standard.

By comparison, the Austin Monitor notes that the National Electric Safety Code mandates only a 7.5-foot buffer from distribution lines, while OSHA recommends 10 feet. It is not known whether the Reserve Road site was governed by the newer 15-foot standard or whether any safety rule was a factor in Friday's incident.

Electrocutions Have Killed Workers At Job Sites Elsewhere

Fatal electrical incidents at construction sites have also occurred elsewhere.

In a separate case detailed by Safety+Health Magazine, a 23-year-old electrician trainee was electrocuted by a 277-volt energized wire at a commercial office-building renovation site, falling about three feet from a ladder onto concrete. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The magazine's reporting on that case recommended that employers use an energy-control program with lockout/tagout procedures, along with a formal Job Hazard Analysis program and training for both qualified and unqualified personnel on jobsite hazards.

On February 25, 2025, a construction accident in Chicago's North Lawndale neighborhood killed a 33-year-old worker who made contact with a high-voltage electrical line while on a crane lift, as reported by Block Club Chicago. A second worker, 26, was injured and initially listed in good condition at Mt. Sinai Hospital. Neither worker was a ComEd employee or contractor, the outlet noted.

No cause has been determined for Friday's electrocution in downtown Austin, and it remains unclear whether any agency has opened a formal investigation into what happened on Reserve Road.
