A new herbal apothecary is putting down roots in downtown Charleston, and it's throwing open its doors this weekend with yoga mats, teacups and a full slate of wellness practices. Fern Apotheca, located at 21 Jasper St., will hold a grand-opening community event on Nov. 1 starting at 10 a.m., and it's free for anyone who wants to stop by.

The event brings together yoga, a tea tasting and other wellness practices, according to The Post and Courier, which reported on the shop's plans to open with bulk herbs, consultations and plant-based wellness products in the heart of the city. Fern Apotheca describes itself as a community hub for plant-based healing. The business was founded by Abigail McClam and Shanequa Singletary, who write on the company's own site that “we are Shanequa Singletary and Abigail McClam, and together we created fern,” according to Fern Apotheca.

The Post and Courier reported that Fern Apotheca was set to open soon, with its Nov. 1 celebration planned for the Jasper Street location.

What's Behind the Counter

The apothecary's offerings run deeper than a typical retail shelf. Fern describes its products as thoughtfully sourced herbs, handcrafted botanical products, flower essences, mushroom wellness and education, per the company's about page. The shop also offers personalized herbal consultations, with staff saying they “take time to understand the whole person, including your health history, daily rhythms, lifestyle, nourishment, stressors, and wellness goals,” according to Fern Apotheca's consultation page.

Those sessions can lead to a range of suggestions. Fern states that consultation recommendations may include herbal teas, tinctures, lifestyle practices, nutrition guidance or other botanical support. The company is careful to frame the service as educational rather than medical, noting its consultations are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent disease, and it says it follows HIPAA privacy and security guidelines when handling consultation health information.

Two Founders, Two Different Paths

Singletary's background includes years of herbal study, clinical training, community consultations and foraging, Fern Apotheca says. McClam brings a different set of skills to the partnership, with years of bodywork, leading rituals and ceremonies, and working with plant medicines, according to the same source.

The Home Herbalist Series is a Wintergreen Botanicals program.

Charleston's Growing Herbal Scene

Charleston's Growing Herbal Scene Fern Apotheca isn't the only plant-focused business in Charleston. Modern Apothecary operates inside Hægur Plant Shop on King Street and offers holistic plant-based products such as bulk herbs, essential oils, herbal teas, tinctures, salves and oil blends, according to Charleston Magazine. That shop also provides wellness consultations and crafts product blends based on a customer's particular needs, the magazine reported.
