How This Fits Into Columbus's Broader Crime Picture
The shooting comes as Columbus has reported a modest decline in violent crime so far this year. As of late June, Columbus police had investigated 35 homicides, compared with 40 at the same point in 2025, the station notes. Police also reported 389 felonious assault cases in 2026, a category that includes shootings, stabbings and other violence, compared with 400 cases at the same point the previous year.
Among this year's homicide cases, 25 victims had been shot, according to data reported by WOSU. More than half of those homicides involved domestic violence or an argument, per the same data, and Columbus police said they had solved more than 80% of this year's homicide cases along with ten additional cases from previous years. Those figures reflect only midyear reporting and do not represent a complete tally for all of 2026.
The South Grant Avenue shooting remains under investigation, and police have not indicated when more details might be released.
