Downtown Houston is gearing up for its annual Día de los Muertos celebration, with Una Noche en Downtown set to take over Market Square Park next Friday, October 30, from 5 to 10 p.m. The free event will fill the park at 301 Milam Street with live music, mariachi, ballet folklórico and a community ofrenda honoring loved ones and pets who have passed away.
According to Downtown Houston
, the night is built around culture, community and remembrance, with a mercado running along Preston Street alongside interactive workshops and complimentary face painting. The organization, which describes itself as working to keep Downtown Houston vital, progressive, clean, safe, fun and forward-looking, posted the announcement this week promoting the event's return. Per
downtownhouston.org
, attendees can expect live music from the Leslie Lugo Band in addition to the mariachi and ballet folklórico performances, plus hands-on workshops from Young Audiences of Houston.
The celebration will not stay confined to one park. The festivities stretch from Market Square and Trebly Park to Main Street Promenade and beyond, the Downtown Houston website notes. On the promenade, the evening features street performers, games and illuminated Día de los Muertos installations throughout the night.
A Free Family Movie Night Rounds Out the Evening
Families looking for a quieter way to mark the holiday can head to Trebly Park, where a free screening of Coco is planned the same night. As reported by prensadehouston.com, family activities there begin at 6 p.m., with the movie itself starting at 7 p.m. The outlet also confirms that Una Noche en Downtown carries free admission, with no-cost registration available through the event page.
City Funding and a Well-Used Downtown Park
Una Noche en Downtown is funded in part by the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance, per downtownhouston.org. Market Square Park itself is no stranger to large cultural gatherings; Downtown Houston+ regularly programs the space with live entertainment, public art, farmers markets and cultural events throughout the year. The park reopened in its current form in 2010 following a major renovation, giving the Downtown core a modern green space that has since become a recurring host for citywide celebrations.
For those who want to extend their Día de los Muertos plans later that weekend, downtownhouston.org notes that a signature celebration is also scheduled at Discovery Green on Sunday, November 1. Between the Market Square festivities, the Main Street Promenade light installations and the Discovery Green follow-up, Houston's Downtown is shaping up to host one of its busiest stretches of Día de los Muertos programming in recent memory.
