Downtown Los Angeles is heading into another dangerous stretch of heat, with sunny skies and a high near 97 degrees Tuesday. The worst of the afternoon warmth arrives after a mild start in the low 70s, while overnight temperatures offer only limited relief.
Dangerous Heat Holds Through Thursday
An Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect across the Los Angeles coast and valleys through 8 p.m. Thursday, according to the National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard. Wednesday is expected to bring 2 to 4 degrees of cooling for coasts and valleys south of Point Conception, followed by cooler temperatures Thursday. Overnight temperatures are expected to provide limited relief.
Afternoon Winds Offer Little Relief
Tuesday will have winds generally between 0 and 10 mph. A southwest breeze around 10 mph is expected during the hottest part of the afternoon, but it is unlikely to do much against temperatures in the upper 90s.
Cooler Weekend Finally Arrives
The forecast turns more manageable Friday, when Downtown Los Angeles should reach about 91 degrees. Temperatures are expected to trend cooler each day Friday through Sunday. A chance of light showers is possible Sunday. Rain chances remain modest, but the cooler trend will be a welcome change after several days of dangerous heat.
Residents are urged to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned spaces when possible, avoid prolonged sun exposure and check on relatives and neighbors. People planning outdoor work, exercise or errands should consider the morning hours, before the heat peaks in the afternoon.
