Kids will get a chance to explore real emergency vehicles and equipment and learn fire and safety tips this Saturday, October 24, when DISCOVERY Children's Museum in downtown Las Vegas hosts its First Responder Day from 10 am to 5 pm. The event runs from 10 am to 5 pm.

The event features hands-on activities, equipment and opportunities to learn about first-responder careers. Families can also explore the museum's Inventor memberships.

The museum itself sits inside the three-story, 58,000-square-foot Donald W. Reynolds Discovery Center in Symphony Park, which contains 26,000 square feet of interactive exhibit space. Normally, admission runs $15 for Nevada residents and $20 for non-residents.

Health and Medical Activities

The museum features a health exhibit and medical activities.

The Agencies Behind the Badges

Three community partners are confirmed to join the event: the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, City of Las Vegas Fire & Rescue, and Red Rock Search & Rescue. LVMPD runs a dedicated Office of Community Engagement that oversees youth diversion programs, including the DREAM mentorship program, across the valley — outreach work financially backed by the nonprofit LVMPD Foundation.

Red Rock Search & Rescue is a team of more than 150 trained volunteers on standby 24/7, providing search and rescue services in Southern Nevada, according to Red Rock Search & Rescue.

The Nevada National Security Site sits 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas in Nye County and spans approximately 1,355 square miles, serving a range of purposes, according to the Nevada National Security Site.

A Long-Running Literacy Partnership

The museum's Toddler Tales program is supported by PNC Grow Up Great, and Toddler Town includes an Art Zone. The museum also offers admission discounts.

Families looking ahead don't have to wait long for the museum's next big draw. Right after First Responder Day wraps, DISCOVERY Children's Museum kicks off its annual Scream for STEAM Halloween educational week from October 25 through October 31. The museum is also in the middle of redesigning its 70-foot climbing tower into a desert-themed exhibit, part of its family programming.
