A driver died early Saturday after a white sedan slammed into a tree while heading north on Railroad Avenue in Newhall, prompting authorities to shut down a stretch of the road for hours and snarling traffic for commuters across the area.
First responders were dispatched at 3:25 a.m. to a single-vehicle crash on Railroad Avenue north of Oak Ridge Drive, according to Lieutenant Griffith of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station, as reported by KHTS Radio. The sheriff's station closed Railroad Avenue between Magic Mountain Parkway and Oak Ridge Drive while crews worked the scene, a closure that caused heavy delays for commuters making their way through Newhall.
As of publication, the cause of the crash remained unknown, and the driver's identity was being withheld pending notification of next of kin, per the same outlet's report. The newsroom said it plans to add information as it becomes available.
A Corridor With a Troubled History
Saturday's crash adds to a grim pattern along Railroad Avenue, which has seen multiple fatal crashes, DUI-related incidents and severe collisions reported over recent years, according to a prior account from hometownstation.com. On January 30, 2025, 14-year-old Shayne Thompson died in a head-on crash at Railroad Avenue and Oakridge Drive, the outlet reported. Two days earlier, a DUI driver had crashed into a power pole at Railroad Avenue and Market Street, cutting power to several blocks in Newhall.
The following month brought another death on the same street. On March 1, 2025, one person was pronounced dead at the scene of a serious collision at Railroad Avenue and Market Street. That victim was later identified as 56-year-old Sean Brown of Sylmar, a passenger killed in a solo-vehicle crash, hometownstation.com reported separately. Brown was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 12:05 a.m. Saturday, according to Deputy Villalobos, and the crash site stretched from Market Street, also called 7th Street, to 6th Street along Railroad Avenue, damaging a power pole in the process. The cause of that crash remained under investigation as of the following Monday afternoon.
Pattern Extends Beyond a Single Intersection
The danger on Railroad Avenue isn't confined to one block. In November 2023, a bicyclist was killed after being struck and run over by multiple vehicles at Railroad Avenue and Market Street, according to hometownstation.com's reporting on the corridor. Several major collisions have occurred at that same intersection in recent months, the outlet noted in its coverage of Brown's death.
A two-car collision also struck the intersection of Railroad Avenue and Oak Ridge Drive on a Sunday afternoon, according to the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department as reported by ABC7. Footage captured the moment a white sedan ran a red light and violently crashed into another car in that incident, the station reported. A separate fatal crash elsewhere in Santa Clarita, on Newhall Ranch Road between Rye Canyon Road and Copper Hill Drive, occurred around 2:40 p.m. on a Friday and may have involved a head-on collision with a wrong-way driver, according to mynewsla.com.
Residents along Railroad Avenue have called for increased traffic enforcement, improved street lighting, and additional safety measures such as speed bumps or designated bike lanes, according to hometownstation.com's reporting on the road's safety record. No cause has been determined for Saturday's crash, and investigators have not released further details on the driver or the circumstances that led the sedan off the roadway and into a tree.
