According to WFAA, officers responding to the area of Interstate 45 and Overton Road found that the driver had been traveling at a high rate of speed before losing control and hitting the guardrail. The driver was transported to a hospital, where officials confirmed they died from injuries sustained in the crash.
Officials have not released the identity of the driver, and the outlet's report notes that the cause of the crash remains under investigation. It is not yet clear what led the driver to lose control, and no further details about the circumstances have been made public.
A Stretch of Highway With a Grim History
The overnight crash adds to a long and troubling record for Interstate 45, a corridor that has repeatedly drawn scrutiny for its crash statistics. The highway running between Dallas and Galveston has consistently been one of the deadliest roads in America, according to a report from click2houston.com.
Per that same report, the Texas Department of Transportation recorded 97 fatal crashes on I-45 in 2023, resulting in 105 deaths. The year before, TXDOT logged 107 fatal crashes on the interstate, compared to 97 in 2021. In 2021, Budget Direct went so far as to name I-45 the deadliest road in the United States, citing an average of 56.5 accidents for every 100 miles of roadway, the outlet reported.
Pattern of Deadly Wrecks Along the Corridor
The numbers aren't just historical. Click2houston.com's report also pointed to a crash on I-45 near the Rayford exit that killed three people and sent five others, including a child, to the hospital. TXDOT data cited in the same report indicates that more than 40 percent of all crashes statewide occur in Harris County, underscoring just how concentrated the danger is along this stretch of highway.
For now, investigators are still working to determine exactly what happened in Tuesday night's crash near Overton Road. The driver's name has not been released, and no additional information about the cause has been provided.
