A 60-year-old pedestrian is dead after being struck by a driver who sped off early Sunday morning in Milwaukee's Walker's Point neighborhood, leaving police searching for answers in the dark hours after the crash. The collision happened around 2:30 a.m. at the intersection of West National Avenue and South 1st Street, a stretch of the neighborhood that sits just south of downtown.
According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the pedestrian was fatally struck while crossing the street by a driver who then fled the scene. As a report syndicated on Yahoo News notes, the victim's name has not been released, and the Milwaukee Police Department says it is seeking an unknown suspect or suspects while the circumstances of the crash remain under investigation.
No description of the suspect vehicle has been released, the same report notes, leaving a significant gap in what the public can look out for as investigators work the case. Anyone with information is asked to contact Milwaukee police at (414) 935-7360, or to reach out to Crime Stoppers anonymously.
A Grim Tally of Traffic Deaths This Year
The Walker's Point crash adds to what has already been a deadly year on Milwaukee's streets. Per the same account, Milwaukee Police Department data show about 40 people have died in 38 fatal traffic crashes so far in 2026, with 23 of those crashes occurring since the start of July alone.
That spike in the back half of the year underscores a broader pattern playing out in cities across Wisconsin. A report from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation found the state's 20 largest cities saw a 7.4% increase in fatal and serious injury pedestrian crashes, with Milwaukee among the cities experiencing that rise even as some other cities saw declines.
Other Recent Pedestrian Deaths in the City
The Walker's Point case is not an isolated one this year. In a separate incident, Milwaukee police said a 39-year-old driver was taken into custody after striking and killing a pedestrian near 49th and Burleigh streets, according to TMJ4. Unlike that case, the driver involved in Sunday's Walker's Point crash remains unidentified and at large.
The city has pointed to pedestrian safety as a priority through its Vision Zero initiative, which according to the City of Milwaukee has included a reported $4.4 million win for pedestrian safety improvements. Whether such investments will be enough to reverse this year's fatality numbers remains to be seen, as Milwaukee police continue trying to track down the driver who left a 60-year-old to die on a Walker's Point street corner.
