A driver died after a vehicle left Texas 121 in Grapevine, struck a guardrail and fell roughly 35 feet before landing near railroad tracks, according to police. The crash happened in the 700 block of the highway, and the driver was the only person inside the vehicle.
According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the car left the roadway in the center median before hitting the guardrail and falling near the tracks. Police said the driver died at the scene, and the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office is expected to publicly identify the driver. Some lanes were temporarily closed right after the crash, but police said the highway did not entirely shut down.
Separate reporting from NBC 5 DFW described the vehicle leaving the roadway in the center median between the northbound and southbound lanes before striking the guardrail and continuing about 35 feet to its resting spot near the tracks. That report noted there were no road closures in the area at the time, though temporary lane closures could still be needed so crews can repair the damaged guardrail.
Conflicting Details on Direction and Vehicle
Accounts of the crash differ on some specifics. NBC 5 DFW placed the crash in the 700 block of southbound North State Highway 121, while a separate report from Accident Data Center described a Honda Civic traveling in the northbound lanes near Mustang Drive before the wreck.
A Spanish-language report from Telemundo Dallas said the crash occurred around 6:15 a.m. as a car was heading south on Highway 121. That outlet reported the driver was declared dead at the scene and had not yet been identified at the time of its report.
Cause Still Under Investigation
Police have said the cause of the fatal crash remains under investigation, and the Star-Telegram reported the cause of the crash had not been released. No additional details about what may have contributed to the vehicle leaving the roadway have been made public.
A Stretch of Highway With a Troubled Recent History
This is not the first fatal wreck to strike this part of Texas 121. In March 2025, a northbound sedan hit a guardrail and flipped over a wall into the southbound lanes near DFW Airport, according to the Dallas Morning News. Two southbound vehicles then struck the sedan, killing its driver at the scene; one other driver suffered minor injuries while a second was not hurt. That crash shut down the highway entirely while officers investigated and cleared the scene, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram previously reported.
More recently, a commercial vehicle plunged off a Grapevine overpass on Texas 121 in August 2025, prompting several hours of lane closures, the Star-Telegram also reported. Together, the incidents point to a stretch of highway that has repeatedly drawn scrutiny following serious crashes, though officials have not tied the causes of these separate incidents together.
For now, the driver's identity in this latest crash has not been publicly released, and the circumstances that sent the vehicle off the roadway remain unclear. Hoodline will update this story as more information becomes available.
