A black Toyota Tundra struck JetSet Pilates Studio in Westchase at about 3:30 a.m. Sunday, causing roughly $10,000 in damage, according to deputies, WFLA reported. The impact shattered glass that spread about 20 to 30 feet into the lobby, the station reported. Studio owner Lauren Christopher said she was relieved no one was hurt.
WFLA identified 26-year-old Kaprice McCree as the suspect. The station reported that the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office characterized the incident as a drunk-driving crash.
Alcohol-Confirmed Crashes in Hillsborough
Hillsborough County recorded 483 alcohol-confirmed crashes in 2022, according to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. That single-year county figure does not establish a trend over time or show how the county compared with Florida statewide.
How Florida Defines an Alcohol-Confirmed Crash
The 2022 Hillsborough figure is a single-year count; it does not show how counts changed over time or establish a statewide comparison. FLHSMV defines an alcohol-confirmed crash as one involving a driver or non-motorist with a blood alcohol content greater than 0.00. The definition excludes drug-confirmed individuals.
Staff Walked Into the Aftermath Minutes Before Opening
Staff arrived about 20 minutes before the day's first class and found the sheriff's office crash report, WFLA reported. They had to assess the damage and determine whether the studio could safely open.
Christopher told WFLA that part of the block slowed the truck and kept it from traveling farther into the studio.
Community Support Helps Studio Push Through
Brianna Paul, manager of JetSet Pilates Westchase, said the team had been working on the location since March. WFLA reported that staff spent the following 48 hours dealing with uncertainty and questions while receiving support from the community.
Staff planned to reopen the studio the day after the crash was reported. Christopher runs JetSet Pilates with her husband and business partner, Patrick. A Tampa Magazines profile says the pair opened two JETSET Pilates studios in the Tampa area in less than a year and had six more locations planned across Tampa Bay.
What Florida Law Says About DUI Property Damage
Under Florida Statute Section 316.193, driving under the influence is defined as operating a vehicle while impaired or with a blood- or breath-alcohol level of at least 0.08. The same statute specifies that a person who drives under the influence and causes damage to another person's property commits a first-degree misdemeanor. A first DUI conviction in Florida carries a fine of $500 to $1,000 and up to six months in jail, subject to the statute's exceptions. It is not yet clear what charges, if any, have been filed against McCree in this case.
