Part of a Pattern of Gunfire on Durham Roadways
Shootings involving vehicles on Durham streets are not new to the city. ABC11 has also reported on a separate drive-by shooting on Barbee Road that injured at least two people, while CBS17 reported that a man and a woman were seriously hurt near NC Central University after shots were fired from a passing vehicle in the area of Concord and Dupree Street.
Back in 2021, WRAL detailed a night of overnight gunfire across multiple Durham streets, with shootings occurring less than an hour apart and within 3.5 miles of each other, prompting road closures. CBS17 has also reported that Durham recorded 10 deadly shootings in the first three months of 2026 compared with five in the same period the year before, describing a sharp rise in shooting deaths and injuries, though the full methodology behind that comparison was not detailed.
The City of Durham maintains a public portal for current and past crime statistics, and the Durham Open Data Portal hosts a dataset on police-tracked shooting events, though no verified figures from either source were available for this incident. For now, Friday's daytime shooting near Duke Street and Horton Road remains under investigation, with police still searching for whoever fired the shot that struck the car.
